The Valenciana region
Situated about 7 kilometres north of Benidorm on the Costa Blanca, Spain, the pretty coastal town of Altea has often been called 'the artists capital of the Costa Blanca', as the narrow streets of the old town are lined with the workshops and galleries of the artists and potters who have made their home there.
The picturesque town of Altea embodies both modern and old Spain. It is one of the most charming places on the Costa Blanca; sheltered by mountains and overlooking the sea. Altea old town itself has long been recognised as the Bohemian centre for musicians, artists and writers from all over Europe.
The old town is set on a hill above the waterfront.
Calle Santo Domingo - in the heart of historic Altea: To get acquainted with Altea, you should leave your watch behind you, and roam the streets at your leisure. Stepping out of Calle Santo Domingo and turning left takes you to the Church Square - the focal point of the Old Town, and home to the landmark blue and white dome.
Terra Mitica, for those who like theme parks at about 10 km away just outside Benidorm Described as "fun for the family" , Terra Mitica is the first real theme park in Spain. It is not an amusement Park. but a theme park that recreates the lost civilisations of the Mediterranean: Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iberia, and the Islands. Its main rides take you back to the myths and legends of these ancient cultures with state of the art technology, special effects, animatronics and digital imagery. The Maze of the Minotaur and the Colossus are part of the attractions here.
2. Callosa is about 15 km.away. The route is extraordinary, with a backdrop of orange and nispero groves lining either side of the route. Close to Callosa d'En Sarrìa is its Nature Park, where the Fonts d'Algar are situated. The Fonts are known as the "Font de Fonts" (Spring of all Springs).
The road to the Fonts from Callosa is well signposted. On leaving Callosa you will see to your right a wonderful view of the valley's water canals and greenery of the Nature Park.
The Fonts themselves are a series of small springs which merge to form a beautiful waterfall and small lagoons of the "Fonts d'Algar" proper. There are lots of footpaths to explore and you will find many natural pools, all fed by the D'Algar waterfall. On a hot summer day the springs is an interesting alternative to the beach, as the spring waters are a steady 18°C. You can swim and relax in the shade of the trees.
The Fonts D'Algar has its own restaurant, plus barbecue and picnic facilities.
Guadalest is surrounded by the Aitana, Serella and Xorta mountains and has been declared a 'Monument of Historical and Artistic Value'. It was founded by the Moors in 715, and comprises a little village within a large castle on a rock It then became part of the domain of Teodomiro and Tarik. In 1238 the town was conquered by Jaime I , and the various counter attacks from the Moors were beaten off. The Moors rose up again in 1248 under the command of Alazraq but were defeated and expelled from the kingdom of Valencia. In 1275 a ruling was passed that any Moor wishing to change his place of abode must have prior permission from the Christians.

"A really great place to stay"
Big thanks to Sue and Peter for a lovely stay in the Townhouse. It is in a great position, right up in the Old Town, just round the corner from the main Church square and the many good restaurants in the streets surrounding it. Despite being in the centre, it was blissfully quiet sitting reading in the leafy courtyard relaxing with a glass of wine. It also has a nice terrace off the second bedroom to sit and catch the sun. We will definitely go back as we had a great holiday.

"Excellent holiday in Altea"
We would like to reiterate all the positive comments posted in previous reviews.
In short – the house was in the perfect location near to the picturesque church square and a good selection of restaurants. It was wonderfully and thoughtfully equipped with everything you could possibly require and Sue couldn't have been any more helpful and obliging from our initial enquiry to our leaving. The added bonus was the beautiful weather.
Many thanks Sue, and we hope to return soon.

"Wonderful house set in fantastic location"
We loved this house and we really liked Altea. Beautiful old town, lovely coast line and good restaurants. The house itself was so comfortable and smart, with really nice touches. Everything had been thought through. It was a joy to be there. We loved sitting on the terrace and listening to the church bells. The courtyard garden was also wonderful. Sue was very helpful and friendly so we felt at home from the start. We hope to visit again next year.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was our pleasure to have you stay with us and to know that you were able to relax and enjoy yourselves both in the house and also in the old Town. Altea's historic quarter is a very special place , and our townhouse also. We try hard to make sure each of our guests' holiday is perfect. It is therefore especially nice to read that you hope to return to us next year. We look forward to seeing you both again.
