The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
The province of Alicante, Costa Blanca on the east coast of Spain has reputedly one of the healthiest climates in the world with more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Winter daytime temperatures seldom fall below 10ºC and can in fact be high enough for sunbathing. At the height of summer average temperatures are around 30ºC but they can reach 40ºC in the middle of the afternoon!
To the north, the province includes the popular resorts of Gandia, Javea and Denia and to the south it extends to the development of Torrevieja. Around here marks the beginning of the Costa Calida.
A number of smallish resorts such as Moraira, Altea and Calpe are particularly popular with tourists. In contrast the high rise resort of Benidorm attracts some 5 million foreign and national tourists every year, the vast majority British.
Until the 1960s Benidorm was a sleepy fishing village, yet today in Europe only London and Milan have more skyscrapers than this mega resort.
The Altea / Altea Hills area
A very short drive or brisk walk downhill brings you to the SH Altea Hills Resort and Salux Hills Spa with its four outdoor lagoon pools (plus one heated indoor), restaurant, café, tennis courts, health and beauty centre, set within a spectacular tropical setting. All of these facilities are available for either residents or guests staying in Altea Hills (charges may apply).
To keep the kids happy (and adults too!) there are plenty of theme parks. Terra Mitica Amusement Park and Rides, Mundomar Marine Animal Park, Terra Natura Wildlife Park and Aqua Natura Water Park are all near Benidorm (only 20 mins away). There are also two safari parks (Vergel and Aitana) in the Alicante area.
The area boasts many award winning 'blue flag' beaches a short drive away (awarded for their clear water). The lovely stretches at Altea and Calpe are particularly noteworthy. Calpe is only 9km away and is ideal for families as it has a long sandy beach and children's play areas.
Other attractions nearby include Altea old town (4km away), wine tasting at Jalon and the waterfalls at Fonts de Algar. Breathtaking views at Guadalest village, ‘hanging’ castle and lake are just 25 min away. The towns of Denia and Javea are also well worth exploring.
The stunning old town of Altea, with its narrow cobbled streets, has designer boutiques, art shops and a magnificent blue domed Church. In front of the church lies a beautiful plaza lined with restaurants and cafe/bars.
The large market that takes place on the seafront promenade of Altea each Tuesday is one of the biggest of its kind on the Costa Blanca.
This is an ideal location for walkers, cyclists and sports enthusiasts. Behind the apartment sits the Sierra Bernia mountain chain which offers beautiful hiking paths and old remains of the Moorish times. The back-country of Altea offers bikers and hikers endless options. There are two water sports centres serving Altea. Both offer diving (PADI), windsurfing, fishing, boat cruises and sailing. The Luis Campomanes Marina (the port of Altea) is only 5 mins away and is also home to many impressive yachts and cruisers, bars and restaurants.
There are 8 superb golf courses within half an hour of the apartments and many more within a 1 hour drive. The Don Cayo course (5 mins away) is a 9 hole course with spectacular views along the coast. Further afield there is a selection of 18 hole courses - including the challenging championship Nicklaus designed course at Villaitana, Benidorm (one par 72 championship and one par 62), the Olazabal designed La Sella course (near Javea), and the Ballesteros designed course at Oliva Nova (near Denia). There are also 9 hole courses at Benissa (Ifach) and Javea. It is always advisable to book tee times.
