The Heart of England/Peak District

The Innkeeper's Cottage is set next door to The Manifold Inn a delightful 200 year old coaching inn and restaurant that offers warm hospitality and quality home cooked food for visitors to the beautiful White Peak.

The Cottage is managed by the Inn staff.

The mellow stone inn is positioned within its own grounds nestling on the banks of the Manifold River, opposite The Old Toll House which used to serve the turnpike and river ford. This beautiful listed building is positioned close to a number of popular walking and cycling routes, including the Manifold Trail, set amongst the famous Staffordshire Moorlands and Derbyshire Dales which offer some of England's most natural and unspoilt scenery.

The Manifold Inn is the perfect place to use as a base for exploring the surrounding natural countryside of the White Peak area or to visit the local Market towns of Bakewell & Ashbourne or Spa towns of Buxton & Matlock and their surrounding attractions.

Open all year round and all day most of the year we offer our guests a range of Ales, Larger, Cider, Wines and Soft Drinks. We offer a Lunch Menu, a Summer Snack Menu and a full Dinner Menu which can be served in our Bar, Conservatory, Snug or Restaurant. We can cater for Dinner Party groups for around 40 guests.

Alstonfield

The Innkeeper's Cottage & Manifold Inn are situated just outside the hamlet of Hulme End which was the northern terminus of the former Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway. The line opened in 1904 and ran from Waterhouses some 8 miles through the valley bottom to Hulme End. The line primarily acted as a service for milk trains and tourism. Around 1919 a daily milk train from Waterhouses to London specifically for this traffic.

Trains ran at a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour and most halts were run on a request basis ! The train would also often stop to pick up passengers at other places on the lineside footpath, if requested ! On the timetable Hulme End was described as "Hulme End for Hartington" which is less than 2 miles up the road from the Inn.

The Railway line closed in 1934.

The Inn has offered hospitality to travellers passing over the bridge for many years. During the time of the Railway it was named The Light Railway Inn and the current day Dining Room can be seen in many of the old photos in the Inn as a “Tea Rooms” serving refreshments to travellers who came to the end of the line before returning back home.

Opposite the pub is the Old Toll House, which at one time served the turnpike and river ford. The bridge that the Toll House sits on was originally built in 1790, but most of the original bridge has subsequently been replaced due to damage and collapse. The current bridge has been there since 1819.

In 1937 the former railway was re-opened by the County Council as the Manifold Way, an 8 mile tarmacked leisure route for walkers and cyclists. The only such route in the Peak District to have a metalled surface throughout its entire length, it is also ideally suited to wheelchairs and prams.
