The Cumbria/Lake District region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Alston / Allenheads area
Situated in the heart of the North Pennines, in beautiful Allendale, the village of Allenheads is reputed to be the highest village in England and stands over one thousand, four hundred feet above sea level. Once an important lead-mining area the village now hosts an interesting display of former life in the settlement in the Allenheads Heritage Centre. Surrounded by beautiful heather-clad moorland, the area is well known amongst walkers, nature lovers and bird watchers. In addition to the town’s own heritage centre, the Beamish Open Air Museum is nearby – showing a recreation of a mining community. Other attractions within easy driving distance include the fascinating city of Durham, Hadrian's Wall and the attractive market towns of Allendale, Alston and Hexham. With so much to see and do, one visit isn’t likely to be enough!

,Englewood Cottage was cosy and comfortable with many period features which we appreciated. We found the county of Northumberland to be outstandingly beautiful with so much space and expansive views. As keen walkers, we were truly spoiled for areas to explore.
