Old School House, Allenheads
from £100 /night help
Cottage | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 12
Overlooking England's highest village, the Old School House offers panoramic views over the stunning rural landscape of the North Pennines. It is an ideal place for a relaxing yet invigorating escape from the daily routine.
The west wing of the Victorian schoolhouse, originally used as a classroom and library, has recently been refurbished to provide spacious, self-contained, accommodation for visitors. It is a beautiful space which includes an open-plan living area with high ceilings, a wood-burning stove, big comfortable sofas and a long dining table with a fitted oak kitchen.
Since summer 2012 we have had a number of delighted visitors including groups of friends and families, artists, writers and poetry groups, musicians, film makers, photographers, and cyclists on the coast to coast route.
"I'm not looking forward to going back to the real world, this has been an amazing place to stay."
- Ditte Elly, Newcastle
“It would be hard to find a place more rural and remote, yet on the inside it has the feel of a New York studio loft.”
- Elaine Williams, The Guardian.
The village of Allenheads has a friendly pub, a café serving delicious home-made food, a village shop with a small range of basic provisions (supermarket deliveries available from Tesco and Waitrose), Heritage Centre and Nature Trail.
For anyone wanting to tour the North of England and Scottish Borders the Old School House in Allenheads is the perfect location, and only about one hour's drive from the A1 or M1.
At 1350 feet it is England's highest village and situated within a designated area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB).
It is just over an hour's drive from the nearest cities of Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, Sunderland, Middlesborough and Carlisle, but it feels a world apart within the rolling North Pennine hills.

"Fantastic Venue for a Wedding Party"
This place is brilliant. If you need somewhere to have a special party this is the place to do it. I had my wedding party here and Helen and Alan made it the most amazing time. The views are stunning, overlooking the village and we were blessed with superb sunshine.
The accommodation was perfect - they sorted out a special honeymoon suite for us and my friends and family filled the rest of the rooms. The rooms were spotless and they gave our guests the choice of prepared hot food for breakfast or filling the fridge with all you need.
In the accommodation area, there is a mixture of bunk rooms and double rooms and a big communal sitting/kitchen. All newly fitted out and immaculate. The rooms are warm and clean and newly decorated. If you're looking for some kind group celebration it's perfect. Showers are great - one of the temp controls wasn't working properly but it was fixed straight away.
The facilities for the party were great and there was enough space for both indoor and outdoor activities. (We had a live band outside!).
We also checked out the Allendale Inn that serves great real ale (Saddlesore is recommended by my new husband!) and a fab little cafe called the Hemmel that did an evening meal for my friends and family.
It was an amazing weekend. Everything was wonderful but the best thing about the place is definitely the hospitality provided by Helen and Alan.
