The Cumbria region

Alston Moor and the Eden Valley are a very special part of Cumbria. Follow the Pennine Way or South Tyne Trail through the Moor, climb Cross Fell or wander across Fells and Moorland. Visit the South Tynedale Railway or go underground at Nenthead Mines or Killhope just over the border into Teesdale. Alston Moor is within sight of three counties - Cumbria, Durham Princes Bishop (Teesdale & Weardale) and Northumberland. Within an hour from major cities of Carlisle, Hexham, Newcastle, and not much further to visit beautiful Durham we are perfectly placed for any type of holiday! Action packed or peaceful - you choose.

Go ghyll scrambling, climbing, caving, cycling or walking, or just find a peaceful spot and relax with a book. Its all here!

UPDATE! Alston Moor now has achieved Walkers are Welcome status

In the Village

Garrigill itself is a friendly little village. We have a village post office and shop for your emergency supplies, the childrens park is just behind St Johns House, and the village hall often has events going on—particularly popular is the monthly pub night (last Saturday each month) as our lovely pub is currently closed but check with us for updates! UPDATE!! George & Dragon pub due to reopen at Easter :)

You can walk straight out of the door in any direction and find beautiful scenery, waterfalls, fells and tracks. The Pennine Way and the C2C both pass the door and the South Tyne Trail too. Maps are available in the cottage as well as our own local knowledge of where to wander! Just four miles walk along the South Tyne brings you to Alston…. (or a short drive if you prefer!)

In the Town

Alston is our nearest town and you will find here the Tourist Information Centre, banks, pubs, a pharmacy, Co-op, cafes and knick knack shops. Popular haunts are the Wholefood shop, Moody Baker, Blackstocks butchers with award winning sausages and the aladins cave which is Mellow Yellow. (Tell them Debbie at the pool sent you!) There are also two petrol stations, both with mechanics should you need them!

Local restaurants include the weekend evening Bistro at Blueberries, Alston House Bar & Restaurant and also Victoria Spice if you fancy the more exotic. The Cumberland Inn is a CAMRA Awarded Inn selling award winning cask ales for the connoisseur and general beer lover alike!

For the children the town hall has regular film clubs, a wonderful library, and soft play (check with them for current days) Fairhill Playground at the top of the town has a new Ball park and equipment. Don't forget the South Tynedale Railway—a wonderful steam railway and sometimes visited by Thomas the Tank and teddy bear friends! For the crafty among you visit Toil & Bubble in station yard, or find out more about local history at The Hub.

Review 1-10 of 13

We had a mini break at St Johns to enjoy hiking through some of the lovely countryside, and I have to say it was wonderful to relax in the pool and hot tub after a days activity - a real bonus! The cottage itself is self-contained, has everything you need and is spacious while still retaining that cosy feeling

"Country retreat"

An excellent cottage in a brilliant calm scenic setting. Location is brilliant . Ideal for those wanting to explore the surrounding areas and walk or hike or if you are just wanting a lazy weekend away the tranquilty will suit you also . The pool is a must so dont forget to take your swim gear . The cottage has a good sized living room with a sofa bed that folds down . Fully equipped kitchen, I manged to cook a full sunday dinner and even baked with my daughter . The main bedroom has a lovely decorated bedroom with a double bed and plenty of storage space. The hospitality Debbie provides means we will be visitng again in the Summer Thank You so much
