The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery. This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits. The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family. The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base. Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.

Foulard Cottage is situated in Nenthead, a quaint village boasting a few local amenities, such as a pub, restaurant and a shop. The village is also home to a museum and visitor centre at its very own historical Nenthead mines, dedicated to telling the story of the mineral mining past of the northern Pennines. Nenthead is also only four miles away from the popular market town of Alston, which claims to be the highest market town in Britain, sitting some 1000 feet above sea level and surrounded by some of the most glorious Pennine landscapes you will find within Cumbria. Characterised by historic buildings lying over steep and winding cobbled streets, this pretty town has plenty to offer the visitor and also forms part of the world famous sea to sea cycle route. Guests to Foulard cottage will also be pleased with its proximity to Carlisle itself, a city packed with history, heritage and outdoor beauty. Offering visitors a wealth of things to see and do, from glorious countryside to historical attractions, art galleries, old age forts, stately homes, historical railways and even Hadrian's Wall, visitors to this remarkable area will never be short of something to entertain the whole family with.
