About this location
The Sporades region
Alonnisos is a member of a group of islands known as the North Sporades (scattered islands) and is the third in line from the mainland after Skiathos (nearest airport) and then Skopelos which is known from the film Mama Mia.
Alonnisos is the most traditional, quieter Island and is surrounded by uninhabited islands and a Marine Park where both the Monk Seal and Elinora Falcon is protected and rare. The seas are clean and ideal for snorkelling and swimming. There is sub-aqua on the Island for both beginners and experienced divers. There are many marked walks together with accompanied walking tours which range from easy to the more difficult for experienced walkers. The Island is quite untouched in many places with wonderful beaches and inland walks full of wild flowers and various flora and fauna.
There are many local festivals on Alonnisos especially for Greek Easter and August 15th but please check for dates for the festivals throughout the year.
A wonderful place to sail to and from and boats can be hired.
The area has many sunny days and can be hot in August though there is usually a cooling wind at this time of year .
In the Spring the Island is covered in flowers and herbs and ideal for walkers. In mid Summer the sea becomes as warm as a bath and a pleasure to swim in together with everything being open and all the summer herbs and flowers out. The almonds are ripening together with other fruit. September is still hot but cooler in the evenings and becoming quieter for those who prefer this. The area has a lovely climate for all nature lovers together with swimming in the sea or pools of the hotels, walking, kayaking or lazing on the terrace watching the sun come up and go down.
