The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude.
Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages.
Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster.
Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Alnwick / Powburn area
Situated in the foothills of the Cheviots and surrounded by glorious countryside, The pretty Northumberland village of Powburn is an excellent holiday location. With a shop and pub within the village itself and a wide range of further shopping and eating opportunities in the nearby town of Alnwick, Powburn is well served. Alnwick is also home to the incredible Alnwick Castle, the film location for Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter movies, as well as the Castle Gardens. Within easy driving distance is the spectacular Heritage Coast of Northumberland, offering sandy beaches and great wildlife habitat. Another point of interest is the house and gardens at Cragside – currently owned by the National Trust. With so much to see and do close by, Powburn makes an excellent base from which to explore this wonderful region.

Guestbook for 2557 - The Forge
A particularly lovely cottage in a good setting for getting to and from Alnwick.
Child friendly particularly the playstation which was a big hit. Very clean and comfortable. Would book again for future visits.

,The property was excellent for 4. It had all the facilities that we would want and was just the right size. The area is stupendous, excellent for an active holiday exploring beaches, castles, nature (hills, lakes, forests) and of course Hadrians Wall. There is more to do than you can fit into a holiday. Lots of local pubs to eat in - the Tankerville Arms in nearby Eglington was an excellent pub with excellent food.
