BookThe Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumberland is a magical place filled with ancient castles, golden sand beaches, rolling hills, rugged moorland and friendly little market towns and the Northumberland National park.
Visit Lindisfarne - known as Holy Island - birthplace of the Lindisfarne Gospels and taste the lovely range of wines and mead made locally. Trace the ancient pilgrimage from Holy Island to the Shrine of Saint Cuthbert in Durham Cathedral and enjoy the magnificent bells peeling and Boys Choir at Evensong.
Northumberland boasts two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty waiting to be discovered, the Northumberland Coast with its golden sand beaches and awesome castles (you could go horse riding in the surf at Bambururgh beach), and the North Pennines with its heather covered hills and extraordinary wildlife - and a bird watchers paradise.
Take a picnic to Kielder Water & Forest Park, great for romantic walks, birdwatching, outdoor activities and water sports.
Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site can be found in Northumberland, with five of the eight excavated forts and endless stretches of unbroken wall rising and falling over dramatic landscapes.
Visit Newcastle, where you can enjoy Museums, Art Galleries, Cathedrals or go to the Theatre Royal or one of the many other venues (such as the Metro Radio arena) with a range of entertainment to suit all tastes. For a real musical treat visit The Sage Gateshead which sits on of the River Tyne, with fantastic views of the river and its bridges, including the Tyne Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and a year round programme of fabulous performances from artists from all over the world.
The Alnwick area
Situated opposite the Barbican of magnificent Alnwick Castle you are steeped in the rich history of the Percy family home. Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England (after Windsor Castle). The Castle contains the finest collection of Italian paintings in the north of England and also one of the most important collections of Meissen porcelain in Britain.
It has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. The earliest mention of Alnwick Castle in the history books appears soon after 1096 when the baron of Alnwick built the earliest parts of the Castle. Discover the Bailiffgate Museum, just around the corner. Alnwick also has some beautiful churches with breathtaking stained glass windows.
The Arts - Alnwick Castle has featured in numerous movies including: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (1991), Monk Dawson (1998), Elizabeth (1998), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2007). It has also been used in many TV series such as Blackadder (1983), Famous Five (1995-96), Ivanhoe (1997).
The famous Alnwick Gardens were created as a place of contemplation, inspiration, education and fun are accessible to everyone, the latest additions being The Poison Garden, The Tree House and The Labyrinth. Alnwick has many architectural features which can be traced through the ages.
The beautiful beaches of the Heritage coast are within 5 miles.A short drive to the west of the town takes you up onto the moors and offers breathtaking views of the Cheviot Hills, Rothbury or visit Cragside House, the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectricity.
Enjoy an excellent range of private local leisure facilities. Remember to pack your swimming costume to visit Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre in Alnwick which has three swimming pools, a modern fitness centre, sports hall, fitness classes and a health spa.
Pop into the the local pub down the road to relax after your days activities. There is also a range of local produce available in Delicatessens and Alnwick market place and an array of restauarants and places to enjoy good food, fine wines and a match made in heaven - legendary Alnwick Rum and Northumbrian hand-made chocolates flavoured with this dark ambrosia. Finish off your day with a visit to Alnwick Playhouse for your relaxation and entertainment (Theatre, Performing Arts, Gallery, Cinema & Bar).

Stayed at the apartment and it was perfect for our needs. We live not too far away in a quiet village so being in Alnwick with all it has to offer was a real treat. So warm and comfortable with every convenience. Comfortable bed and wonderfully clean surroundings...would REALLY review this place as 5* Red roses, cake, wine and biscuits greeted us...with thanks! |
