The Northern England / Yorkshire / Northumberland region

Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster.

Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.


Alnwick / Eglingham area

Comprised of neat stone houses with well-kept gardens, a Victorian church, large pub and traditional restaurant, the village is a wonderful setting to try living life at a more leisurely pace. For those wanting to escape the hustle-and-bustle of the city, the surrounding hills and valleys offer fascinating walks through this vibrant countryside.

Birdwatchers will enjoy trips to the Farne Islands which are rich with wildlife, though you don't have to go far to spot some interesting birds as closer to home, herons have been sighted in the Eglingham burn. For those who like history, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is very close by, as are the castles of Warkworth, Chillingham, Alnwick and Dunstanborough.
