The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Alnwick / Embleton area
The pretty village of Embleton is ideal for exploring the Northumbrian Heritage Coast. It is served by four pubs, two of which serve food. Grey’s Inn also has 3 open fires, making a winter pint a cosy experience. The Embleton Heritage Trails Project consists of 6 trails to help you explore the history and heritage of the village. The trails range from a short walk around Embleton to a six-mile trail that takes you into the tranquil countryside. On the yellow sand of Embleton Bay near the sand dunes is a large grey rock called 'Bathing Rock'. A little to the northwest of this is the famous 'Vanishing Rock' on which the name 'Andra Barton' is carved. Barton was a Scottish pirate, killed in a sea battle with the English in 1511. Embleton is also within easy reach of other local attractions, such as Alnwick Castle and Dunstanburgh’s golf course.

Guestbook for 1153 - Rock Mill Cottage
A lovely cottage, beautifully furnished and in a quiet peaceful location. The owners were very friendly and helpful, we would love to visit again!
Mrs Gillam, Chesterfield, Derbyshire
December 2011
,We booked the cottage for a special occasion and were made to feel very welcome by the owners. The cottage was cosy with
a woodburner in the living room, comfortable bedrooms, modern downstairs bathroom and a small kitchen with plenty crockery for our family who visited us and we felt very at home there. The setting, in the heart of the lovely Northumbrian countryside, close to beautiful unspoilt beaches, is very peaceful and we had a very enjoyable, restful holiday with pleasant walks in the autumn sunshine and visits to interesting local villages and castles, including the nearby historic town of Alnwick. Although the road to Rock Mill has an uneven surface it was well worth the drive to such a haven of tranquility in such lovely rural surroundings.

,Owners were very welcoming. Booked at short notice but property was well prepared on arrival and nothing seemed too much trouble. Extremely peaceful position. We have 2 boys and they really enjoyed the stay with a safe field to play in and feeding the chickens and geese each day.
