The Northern England / Yorkshire / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike.
Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages.
Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
Alnwick / Embleton area
The village of Embleton can be found on Northumberland’s Heritage Coastline, close to the magnificent ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle. Embleton has a fascinating history, which stretches back to pre-medieval times. During the Wars of the Roses, the village suffered frequent invasion attempts by the Scots, and much later, in the 19th century, it was famous for its whinstone quarry. To this day a curving whinstone ridge provides shelter from the east winds.
The history of the parish is the focus of the new Heritage Trails Project, which has led to several walks being designed in and around Embleton. The village has several excellent pubs and a fine Norman church. As well as the Dunstanburgh ruin, there are many other local attractions to entice visitors. These include the gardens at Howick Hall and Alnwick Castle and Garden. Among the excellent golf courses in the vicinity is the Dunstanburgh Links Course.
