The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Alnwick / Embleton area
The charming village of Embleton dates back to pre-medieval times, and its fine Norman church, the Church of the Holy Trinity, was built in the 12th century. In recent years, a Heritage Trails Project has been set up to explore the history of the parish, and its well-designed walks range from a stroll round the village to a six mile route along the coast and inland. Golfers can enjoy playing on a number of different courses in the area, and the area is famous for its wide, sandy bays, dunes and beaches. Close by is the fishing village of Craster and the magnificent ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle. Howick Hall gardens and Alnwick Castle and Garden are among the local attractions which are also well worth a visit. Embleton offers a warm welcome to visitors, and is an ideal base from which to explore this beautiful part of Northumberland.

Guestbook for 562 - Embleton Cottage
It was so quiet and peaceful and the cottage was homely and comfortable. We are going to re-book for our Silver Wedding Anniversary next year and we would certainly recommend the cottage to anyone wanting a nice quiet holiday.

,Embleton Cottage was clean, comfortable and roomy, and we had everything we needed for a restful stay. We liked the open fire and spent one evening in after a meal at a local pub, which was very good. The location of the cottage was extremely quiet, especially at night which suited us! The village was picturesque and the local people friendly. Embleton was an ideal base for exploring further afield, but also had some sandy beaches nearby. We loved it and would definitely like to return.
