The Northern England / Northumberland region
Welcome to a land far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, rich in tradition and beauty brimming with places to see and things to do amongst the most spectacular of landscapes.
Explore mile upon mile of gloriously uncrowded golden sandy beaches and stunning countryside set amongst two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the rugged Northumberland National Park.
Discover more castles than anywhere else in England, the birthplace of English Christianity on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the historic World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, stunning Alnwick Garden, picturesque towns and villages and with a climate that is beautiful whether fresh and cold, windy and wet or sunny and calm, there is so much to see and do.
The Alnwick / Alnmouth area
Alnwick town and Alnmouth village present postcard-pretty choice for visitors and typify the true England you would hope to find. The historic market town of Alnwick is lined with unusual shops and boutiques, with great shopping to also be found in neighbouring towns with welcoming locals and traditions.
There is a local village store with all provisions you need and a Post Office as well as some superb local fayre at the local eateries. During the summer enjoy the famous Alnmouth Raft Race in August - a must to see! If you fancy a day out, 5 minutes in the car and you reach the Market Town of Alnwick where Harry Potter scenes were filmed at the Alnwick Castle.
Alongside it, there are the famous Alnwick Gardens to explore and maybe even take afternoon tea at the Treehouse! With plenty of shops and restaurants as well as a thriving local Farmers Market, you are spoiled for choice. Further afield you can visit places such as Bamburgh for a wonderful walk and feast on local kippers and salmon in Craster.
Beautiful villages are dotted throughout unspoilt countryside of pure river valleys, rolling moorlands and lush green landscapes. Pretty fishing ports are scattered along a spectacular coastline, many in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, such as Seahouses with its views of Bamburgh Castle and the wildlife rich Farne Islands; and Craster, famous for its smokehouses and delicious kippers.
Alnwick, voted 'Best Place in Britain to Live' by Country Life magazine, is renowned for shopping, a lively events calendar and farmers' markets. It's also home to The Alnwick Garden and Alnwick Castle, rising dramatically above the town and famous among Harry Potter fans as the setting for Hogwarts. Don't miss Alnwick's 'Barter Books' either, one of the largest second hand bookshops in Europe.
Alnmouth hosts it's own golf club, formed in 1869, the course was designed and created by Mungo Park, who later became a famous golf professional. Alnmouth Village is the oldest 9 hole links course in England and, many famous names of the past have graced the Alnmouth links, including Harry Vardon, J.H.Taylor, Tom Morris, and The Prince of Wales. The Golf Club welcomes visitors on holiday, and also caters for visiting parties.
The many towns and villages dotted around Alnmouth span a scale of contrasts from cosy coastal hamlets to remote hillside locations. Amble is a traditional fishing port with a modern marina and interesting seafront. You can sail a yacht from Amble or one of the many other harbours and inlets on the coast.
Windsurfing, water ski-ing and diving among the wrecks off the Farne Islands are also popular. For those who enjoy the experience of horse riding, cycling or walking it would be difficult to find anywhere better, with the coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty beginning just north of the town.
The coastline embraces Warkworth Castle, which towers over the picturesque streets of Warkworth, noted for its arts and crafts, while nearby Alnmouth boasts superb sandy beaches and the historic Foxton Golf Course. Picturesque Craster, renowned for herring fishing and world famous Craster kippers lies nearby. Walk or cycle a mile north to ancient Dunstanburgh Castle, perched high above the rippled sands of Embleton Bay and last occupied during the War of the Roses.

I spent my seventieth birthday at the wonderful Lindores House. Lindores is the best equipped house I have ever stayed in. It is spacious, comfortable and perfect for a family get together. Three bathrooms added to the luxury and there was nothing lacking in the house. Being two minutes from the beach with fantastic views of the estuary delighted all of us and the children had great fun at the park nearby. There are also many interesting places, castles and gardens to visit in the area. The children enjoyed themselves so much that they did not want to go home at the end of their stay. The "welcome" gift and the friendly service were very much appreciated. I shall never forget my brilliant birthday treat at Lindores House and would definitely recommend Lindores to anyone visiting Northumberland. Response: We are delighted you had a memorable birthday! |

The house is perfect for a family holiday. It's clean, warm and comfortable and is ideal for cooking, seating and entertaining a big group of people. We were celebrating my 60th birthday and we couldn't have wished for a nicer house to have my party. The kitchen is well equipped and the utility room is great for doing the prep. for a big meal. We were amazed at how warm the house was, given the bitter weather. I'm told that all the beds were really comfortable and there was always lots of hot water too. Having so many showers and WC's was fantastic - it made the morning routine go so much more smoothly. Alnmouth is lovely - the locals are so friendly and being so near to the beach and play area was great. Our party ranged from 3 to 63 years and there was something in the area for everyone. Bamburgh, Lindisfarne and a boat trip with Billy Shiel's Farne Island Cruises to see the seals were highlights. I was lucky to be treated to a wonderful facial and full body massage at the Village Farm Secret Spa in Shilbottle, and a visit to Barter Books in Alnwick is a must both for book lovers and those like me who are interested in buildings (its an old railway station). Our week was rounded off by a great family lunch (pre booked) at the Treehouse restaurant in Alnwick Gardens. As well as having fantastic food and service, we loved the quirkiness of the building and the wobbly bridges. Lindores and the week in Alnmouth live up to and went beyond my expectations and that is largely down to the Chappel's clever refurbishment of this lovely house which for us felt like 'home' for our stay. Response: Thank you. We are so pleased you had a great birthday celebration! |
