Northern England region

The northerly county of Northumberland is a hidden gem of totally unspoilt countryside and wonderful long stretches of pristine sandy beaches. If you want to stretch your legs and breathe in clean country air this is the place for you, with miles of wide open spaces and magnificent views. The county has three distinct sub regions; a coastline stretching some forty miles with quiet sandy beaches and pretty coastal harbour villages. Inland visitors will find dramatic rolling moorland and forests, much of which is National Park and to the south of the region is the famous Hadrian's Wall which runs coast to coast and is now a World Heritage Site. Apart from Northumberland's natural assets the county is steeped in history and has had a turbulent past which is characterised by more than its fair share of castles and ancient hill forts, some of which were built to repel Viking invaders. It was also the scene of the border wars and conflicts between the English and Scots in the 14th-16th century.

Alnwick

Ash Cottage is located in Dunstan, a pretty hamlet situated along the exquisite stretch of Heritage Northumbrian Coastline. Also dotted along this coastline and within easy reach of this cottage are popular towns and villages such as the pretty village port of Craster, the historic market town of Alnwick and the famous Dunstanburgh Castle. Alnwick, for example, boasts a wide range of shops, tea rooms, restaurants, pubs and entertainment venues. Alnwick is also home to Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Gardens and the largest tree house in Europe, making it an excellent destination for a family day out. Visitors who enjoy exploring the outdoors are also well catered for in this area, with a number of excellent walking opportunities available along the cliff tops near Dunstanburgh Castle, along with numerous fishing, cycling, horse riding, golfing opportunities available locally. Acting as an excellent base from which to explore some of the best sights and attractions in Northumbria, Ash Cottage is a genuine rural retreat.
