Northern England region

Northumberland is the most northern county of England, most of the county is further north than Hadrian's Wall, built by the Romans as a limit to their empire and the border with Scotland. The cottage is close to the National Park which is wild and desolate with stunning scenery, yet just 10-15 miles from the beautiful beaches, coast path and ancient castles. A visit across the road causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a must (tide times available in the cottage) - the birthplace of Christianity in England and with its association of the Lindisfarne Gospels - the first translation of the Bible into English. Also on the island are the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory and Castle.

Alnwick

The cottage is in the village of Glanton, which has a pub serving food, small shop / post office and bus link. The next village of Powburn (1.5 miles) has a much larger village shop and a petrol station. The larger market town of Alnwick, Rothbury and Wooler are all 6 - 8 miles (10 - 12 km). A full range of facilities is available at each: Alnwick is the largest of the 3 and also has Alnwick Castle (Hogwarts for Harry Potter fans) and the famous Alnwick Gardens. Rothbury is a beuatiful market town giving access to the National Park, Upper Coquet Valley and Simonside Hills whereas Wooler is the gateway to the Cheviot Hills and College Valley. The Scottish Border town of Coldstream, Kelso and Jedburgh are also within easy reach.

Thank you so much for your positive comments. We too were very disappointed when the Pub closed without notice and immediately removed reference to it in our property description. The good news is that the Pub has now re-opened (October 2012), and we are of course hoping it will remain open thus enhancing the facilities in the village.

The village shop is good for fresh milk, bread, daily newspapers, essential supplies like sugar and some tinned food but sadly not much other fresh produce (it is also a Post Office and does stamps and cash withdrawals for several banks). We've tried very hard not to over-state the capabilities of the shop in our description. A much better shop is in the next village at Powburn, there is a full range of shops in Alnwick, Rothbury & Wooler and a supermarket at Alnwick. For those that like walking, several walks can start from the Cottage door and the village also has a bus service to Alnwick & Wooler.
