Enquire nowThe Northern England / Northumberland region
The Northumberland Coast is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and it's easy to see why.
With it's glorious beaches, dramatic cliffs, stunning Castles (more than any other County in the UK) you'll struggle to decide what to do!
The Alnwick / Craster area
DUNSTAN
The beautiful and peaceful Hamlet of Dunstan is the location of Curlew Cottage. It is a rural Hamlet and perfect for a quiet getaway near the coast. Just a short stroll from the Cottage is the wonderful Cottage Inn which has a very strong reputation locally for it's food and drink, fantastic if you don't fancy cooking!
This area is fantastic for wildlife, look in the fields round for deer and hares, in the woods around the Cottage for foxes, badgers, woodpeckers, bats, owls and red squirrels. Also frequently seen are buzzards, kestrels, sparrow hawks and of course curlews to name but a few! If you enjoy and appreciate wildlife, Curlew Cottage is an ideal base in Northumberland. Dunstan and nearby Craster are both well served by public transport. Arriva run a 'Coast and Castles' Service, so if you would like to leave the car behind and explore Northumberland's stunning coast by bus, it's very convenient.
CRASTER (0.5 miles)
Nearby Craster is an ancient Fishing Village with a rich history and heritage. Craster is named after the Craster family who had held the estate since 1272. The harbour was built to commemorate the death of a member of the Craster family who died while serving in the army in Tibet in 1904. The memorial is still visible on the harbour wall, as are the remains of a much taller structure at the end of the harbour that was used to lift stone from the nearby quarry (now the main car park) on to the boats in the harbour. The stone from the quarry (which was shut down in 1939) was shipped to London where it was used for kerb stones, it is now a nature reserve under the protection of the Northumberland Wildlife Trust.
The Village has a lot to offer with it's attractive harbour and good amenities. It is also an excellent place for the food lover to visit, it has been nominated in the past for a Google Street Award for best 'Foodie Street'. This is mainly down to Craster's world famous Kippers (cured herring) that are still produced by L Robsons and Sons. The Shoreline Cafe in Craster has great coffee and light meals with (it has to be said) odd sounding cake to die for, in very relaxed surroundings - great after a bracing walk across the cliffs (dogs are welcome at he outside seating). Or why not try a crab sandwich at the Jolly Fisherman, recently taken over this pub offers great views and offers free internet access. Pop into the Mick Oxley Gallery (Opposite Robson's Smokehouse) for beautiful seascapes and contemporary ceramic and jewellery.
ATTRACTIONS
Northumberland has a huge range of attractions to explore, in fact there's far too many to mention them all here! Some of our favourites include: Farne Island Boat Trips, Dunstanburgh Castle, Howick Hall and Gardens, Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden, Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island and Cragside House and Gardens. All of these places are easily accessible from a base at Curlew Cottage.
WALKING
Being so close the to the sea, there are beautiful coastal walks right on your doorstep when you stay at Curlew Cottage. Stage three of the Northumberland Coast Path starts in nearby Craster (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and offers some of the finest coastal walking in Europe. But for those who take walking a little more seriously than just a gentle stroll in beautiful surroundings, Northumberland has a huge amount to offer. It's not only the stunning coast, but a short drive into the Northumberland National Park (into the Cheviot hills) brings some amazing scenery and excellent walking opportunities.
GOLF
The county has a huge number of attractive golf courses. The nearest being Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course, a lovely course that offers beautiful views of Dunstanburgh Castle and Embleton Bay that are difficult to beat! Others nearby include: Alnwick Golf Club, Alnmouth Golf Club, Alnmouth Village Golf Club, Morpeth Golf Club, Rothbury Golf Club, Warkworth Golf Club, Seahouses Golf Club and Bamburgh Castle Golf Club to name just a few. More than enough choice to please even the most ardent golfers.
DAY TRIPS
With its central location within Northumberland the Cottage is also an ideal base for a day trip a little further afield. Edinburgh is just over an hour away on the train from Alnmouth and a is a beautiful City to explore at any time of year. Driving up to the Scottish border via Otterburn and to Jedburgh and Kelso offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK. This route also lets you take in Carter Bar, the border point between Scotland and England. The views on offer here have to be seen to be believed. Newcastle City Centre and the Metro Centre (the largest shopping centre in Europe and home to the North East's only IMAX Cinema) are also about a 45 minute drive away, and well worth a visit for the museums, culture, dining and shopping opportunities.
