Northern England region
Northumberland has a mixed and often defensive history as the border land between Scotland and England. As Scotland and England were once at war the men of Northumbria were granted an inordinate amount of power in order to protect the English border from invasion.
As a result, Northumbrian culture is a mix of English and Gaelic including the Northumbrian Smallpipe (a type of bagpipe). Northumberland even has its own tartan, referred to by the Scots as the Shepherd's Tartan; Northumberland music is not dissimilar to Scotland's either.
Northumbrian heritage steps back further as it was once inhabited by the Romans. The remains of their presence is most famously represented by Hadrian's Wall.
Hadrian's Wall is an important feature at the southern point of Northumberland National Park, most of which is 800m above sea level and stretches north as far as the Scottish border.
Alnham is set in the heart of the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland National Park. The perfect rural retreat, it is ideal for fans of nature and wildlife.
The war-ridden past of Northumberland has legend in the village where it is believed that the church was brought to ruins by William Wallace, otherwise known as Braveheart. There is a fortified tower next to today's church dating back to the 14th century and thought to be a sign of defence against the threat of invasion.
Out and about, many examples of Northumberland's turbulent past are in evidence. One of the most spectacular is Alnwick Castle, parts of which date back to 1096 and the castle was used a location in the Harry Potter movies.
If castles fascinate you there are plenty to be seen within easy reach of the cottage including the well preserved Warkworth Castle, Bamburgh Castle and the allegedly haunted Chillingham Castle.
An ideal spot for walkers of all abilities there are many paths, trails and bridleways to follow, wildlife to discover and scenery to be astounded by. Within the grounds of the cottage, barn owls, woodpeckers are often spotted and even the endangered red squirrel.
The natural history reserves of the Farne Islands can be reached by a short boast journey from the seaside port of Seahouses. The islands offer a spectacular range of sea birds and the largest breeding colony of Grey Seals in the country.
