The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Alnwick / Glanton area
Glanton is a little gem of a village that lies at the foot of the Cheviots and is in some of the most picturesque countryside that Northumberland has to offer. Glanton has a village store and a public house, but for a wider range of shops and other amenities, the busy town of Alnwick is only nine miles away. Alnwick is also famous for its Castle and spectacular gardens, which are well worth a visit. The small town of Rothbury is also close by, as are the house and gardens at Cragside - a National Trust property. The village is well placed for exploring the scenery of the Northumberland National Park and has numerous cycle routes and footpaths as well as the Heritage Coastline. Glanton is a perfect base for a holiday in Northumberland.

,We loved the friendly feel of the house and the welcome we received from the owners (fresh flowers and cream scones on arrival). Our girls loved the outdoors and being able to wander round the garden and surrounding paddocks.

,The location of the cottage is beautiful as is the whole area. The cottage is very comfortable and spacious. The hosts are welcoming and a good source of information. They leave you to yourself unless you need their help. There is lots to do, good walks, beaches, gardens and castles etc. We would recommend Northfield farm cottage to anyone who likes a peaceful holiday and it would be particularly good for anyone with children or dogs.
