The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Alnwick / Embleton area
The lovely village of Embleton is a perfect base for exploring areas of Northumberland’s Heritage Coastline. The nearby village of Craster can be reached along a beautiful grassy path, which goes beside the sea and past the impressive ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle - the largest in Northumberland. There are four pubs in the village of Embleton and two of them serve food. Seven miles away is Alnwick where there is a good range of shops and places to eat. Alnwick Castle is a must-see attraction with its beautiful gardens. Also famed for its gardens is Howick Hall, open to visitors during the summer months. For golf fanatics there are several notable courses in the area including Dunstanburgh Links Course which is only one mile away from Embleton.

Guestbook for 1786 - Croft Cottage
Lovely decor, nice detached cottage which was handy for local places such as Alnwick, Seahouses and all the tourist routes. The cottage was heated, and a comfortable temperature. There were books and games to play in the cottage and it was very peaceful. Lovely to see and hear the wildlife such as hares, owls, and pheasants.
