The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike. Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages. Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Alnwick / Powburn area
Set in the wonderful Northumberland countryside, the pretty village of Powburn is situated in the foothills of the Cheviots and surrounded by glorious scenery. The village boasts a shop and pub, as well as close proximity to Alnwick which provides a wide range of further amenities. The village itself makes an ideal base for exploring the Northumberland National Park, whilst Alnwick’s imposing castle is known to millions as ‘Hogwarts School’ in the Harry Potter films. This impressive building also boasts beautiful castle gardens which are packed with activities for all the family. Also worth visiting are numerous points on the spectacular coastline, the attractive small town of Rothbury and the well known National Trust country house and gardens at Cragside.

Just what the doctor ordered. We enjoyed the warm, calming sitting room, and loved the log burning stove, which was easy to use. The cottage was central to lots of wonderful walks and interesting places to visit.
