The Costa Tropical/Granada region
The area is known as Costa Tropical because of the unique sunny micro-climate with average temperatures of 18 degrees C in the winter and 25 degrees C in the summer enabling an abundance of exotic plants and tropical fruits to flourish. The majestic coastline has many quiet small coves and beaches (including a nudist beach) flanked by the surrounding mountains. Within one hours drive is the city of Malaga with the Picasso Museum and also the ancient city of Granada with the world famous Alhambra Palace and gardens, a further 30 minutes drive is the Sierra Nevada ski area.
Almunecar area
Almunecar dates back to the 3rd century B.C. and still manages to retain the atmosphere and character of a old Spanish town with narrow streets, tapas bars and a wide choice of reasonably priced restaurants. There is a daily municipal market where you can buy fruit, vegetables, meat and freshly caught fish. There is also a weekly open air market selling Spanish artesania as well as bargain clothes, shoes etc. There is a good choice of supermarkets to be found in the modern area of town and ample parking nearby. The town boasts a water park (summer only), botanical gardens/bird park, Moorish castle which overlooks Park Majuelo where regular open air concerts are held in the summer months. The many town beaches (sand/shingle) are spread over a distance of some 4 kms and are flanked by palm treed promenades which enable you to walk from one end to the other with the opportunity to stop at one of the many bars and restaurants you will find on the way.
