El Cobertizo is an amazing unique shabby chic farmhouse with a Moroccan influence offering total privacy, all day sun and al fresco dining with a roof top sea view. We are located just a twenty minute picturesque drive from the beach into the hills overlooking the lush tropical valley of Los Banuelos once favoured by the Phoenicians. Quiet, peaceful and totally private this is the 'stuff of dreams', the 'real Spain' where the sound of goats' bells still tinkle over the hills.
It is easily accessible to La Herradura, Salobrena, Nerja, Malaga and Marbella or a visit to Granada, the Alhambra and local markets for bargain hunting, Otivar water falls, day sailing from Marina del Este and many excellent restaurants for eating out. The villa benefits from its own private 10.5 meter pool. Four rooms all on one level have access to the spacious terraces and pool with stunning mountain views. With four double bedrooms the villa is ideal for families, with plenty in the surrounding area to see and do during your stay. Suitable for families getting together, small groups of friends and great for a couple too - it is one of those homes which offers flexible accommodation.

There are numerous terraces filled with plants and trees - sun beds and lounging areas. There is a small pet domestic cat named Tigger who requires feeding please!

The Andalucia region
Granada! What a fantastic vibrant university city - home of the 'eighth wonder of the world' the Alhambra Palace and close to the Sierra Nevada mountain range (beautiful in summer too) and of course the region of mountain villages known as Las Alpujarras, famous for their unique mini-ecology, clinging to the southern flanks with deep, sheltered tropical valleys and gorges which run down towards the Mediterranean.
Less than an hour's drive and you reach the old fishing port of Motril on the Costa Tropical. (There is stunning country route taking you instead through Otivar with her waterfalls and through the village of Jete to Almunecar, Marina del Este and La Herradura (horseshoe bay) on the coast) - just 15 minutes from Nerja and an hour and a half from Marbella!
Los Banuelos is a 20 minute breathtakingly beautiful drive into the hills and mountains behind Almunecar town where there is truly something for everyone - restaurants, shops, a picturesque marina, sailing and watersports, hang gliding, golf, horse riding, mountain biking, climbing, trekking, a bird park and much more. Many historical sites, art galleries, local artisans' exhibits and cultural venues including a Roman fort, aquaducts, Phonecian fish farms, caves and museums.
The Costa Tropical has 19km of coastline and over 20 beaches; some are hidden coves, some designated for naturists, many have plenty of beach side cafes and restaurants with lively tapas bars and night life. Enjoy real Flamenco in authentic surroundings or just relax. Almunecar is a 50 minute easy drive from Malaga or Granada airport. Our house in the mountains is totally private but not isolated. We are surrounded by olive groves, mangoes, lemons and avocados - in these tough economic and difficult times the Spanish are returning to their roots - happy industrious families farming their land, re-terracing their hills with the sound of singing and laughter reverberating - especially at weekends when they visit their cortijos.

"Peace and tranquility, our own superb private island"
We so enjoyed our stay up in the hills, what a wonderful place. The whole ambiance and character was so very different from our home in Sydney, Australia. A holiday of a difference and not to be missed. Local shops, restaurants and the beach are not far away. The Alhambra - a must visit, is about one + hour's drive. 1 1/2 hours to the snow fields, though we didn't do that trip. All in all a most enjoyable time and we look forward to a return visit one day. Paul and Harriet's hospitality, care and guidance were impeccable.

"A slice of heaven - gorgeous vistas and an amazing, unique home"
Harriet and Paul's home was so perfect for our mini family reunion. Lovely variety of spaces, everything imaginable for cooking meals, and that view -- to die for! We so appreciated the welcome, and Harriet and Paul's help to get settled, including being met in town and guided up the winding road to the house. Experienced, confident driver is a must, especially if you have standard transmission. The pool is lovely, too, and we certainly used it when the days were hot. There is lots to do in the area -- the house and town were a great base for exploring, or just staying home and relaxing. The Wifi/cell service was sometimes iffy, but generally adequate. Tigger was also a charming housemate!

"A Little Bit of Paradise"
We stayed for at this cortijo in November 2013 for just under a week. It is an amazing place, beautifully furnished and with the most stunning views!
The owners left us with a great array of local produce including avocadoes, almonds and custard apples. Also firewood as the evenings did warrant a bit of heat! Daytime, it was shorts and t-shirt weather and we ate outside on numerous occasions.
The cortijo is in the country and about a 15 minute drive to the nearest town of Almuñécar. Almuñécar has everything you need, restaurants, stores, theatre, historical sites and an old town that is well worth a visit.
If you like walking, this is the place for you. The scenery is to die for and if you love peace and quiet, you will not want to leave, we didn't!

What more can I add to the comments already made other than to try and describe the overall feeling of the house.
El Cobertizo is not just a rental villa,it is a home. The walls breathe of the love and happiness this villa has known and it welcomes strangers like us with open arms, ensuring a happy relaxing reprieve from the real world.
On a practical note the villa is very well equipt with everything you could possibly need to ensure a comfortable holiday.
The welcome pack provided by Harriet and Paul is excellent, the best we have ever received in many years of renting.
Internally the villa feels spacious with thought and flair given to the overall decor and emphasis on comfort. Huge comfy sofas and sky tv if you want to just relax a bit in the evenings.
Externally stunning views with many different areas to relax away the day. The pool is a delight, not just one of those little splash pools but a very good size with room to do a few laps. There is also plenty of outdoor furniture and sunshades for the hottest parts of the day.
If you do visit make sure you go out at night to look at the stars, on clear nights it's wonderful,
With no light pollution you see so much more and can even see the Milky Way.
The only sadness is leaving, although did I just hear the walls sigh 'a job well done' in response to our contented smiling faces as we leave.
Harriet and Paul are the most amazing hosts we have ever come across, genuinely friendly and gracious and always at the end of the phone if you need them.
Both Paul and myself wish you the very best for your upcoming adventures and thank you for such a wonderful holiday and such happy memories.

Wonderful house with geranium lined terraces, a sapphire pool, beautiful vistas and surrounded by hillsides with tropical fruit trees. A magical stay. A big thank you to Harriet and Paul. A truly stunning house in a beautiful part of Andalucia.

"Lovely retreat in Spanish hills!"
We stayed here over Christmas with two young kids. The house was beautiful, the views spectacular, the stargazing amazing, and the location wonderful for relaxing or easy for many fascinating day trips. Harriet and Paul were excellent hosts - extremely friendly and helpful. Gave an insight into a side of Spain not otherwise easily available. Highly recommended for short or long stays!
Thank you for such a positive review - we really enjoyed spending some time with you and the girls - hope you had a great time in Barcellona on your route home.....all the very best Paul and Harriet

"Amazing Spanish hideaway"
From the moment Harriet and Paul showed us their gorgeous house, we knew it would be difficult to leave. The photos here show a wonderful hideaway within easy driving distance to all amenities and what you see on arrival is even better. Paul and Harriet were extremely helpful and it was a pleasure to meet them.
The house is huge and beautifully decorated with such detail it really feels like a home, complete with the sweetest cat! The kitchen is fabulously equipped with everything a kitchen could ever need and the kasbah is perfect for afternoon sangria and a relaxing nap.
As we stayed in the middle of July the weather was scorching on some days and it was a real treat to sunbathe by the pool and enjoy a dip, or make use of the air conditioning throughout the house.
You will not be disappointed. Be prepared for an exhilarating first drive up to the house as the hillside roads are steep in places but really adds to the feeling of stepping out of reality for a little while. A great experience I will never forget. Thank you.

"Wonderful week in the most beautiful & relaxing house in the hills above Almunecar"
The owners have created a beautiful house and equipped it to a very high standard. A lot of consideration has gone into ensuring you have a fantastic stay. From the very generous welcome pack of food & drink on arrival to the quality of the beds, the wifi, SkyTV, high quality furnishings, air conditioning, beautiful swimming pool, the list goes on. We also found the owners to be kind, considerate and flexible which also added to the whole experience, thank you. We'll be back!

Two families with teenage children in need of a rest and some sun. This was the perfect place, with lots of room for everyone and every home comfort. The house is quirky and characterful, homely and delightfully 'foreign'. The pool is amazing. Almunecar was a drive away down a challenging road so we stocked up and stayed put a lot of the time, but the house is well positioned for day trips. We enjoyed the Alhambra Palace, the caves at Nerja and Frigiliana, and tapas in the square in Almunecar after dark is a must to absorb the atmosphere. Watch out for high winds at sunset some nights - pool inflatables and umbrellas may need retrieving from the hillside if you are not aware! The owners are friendly and on hand if needed and recommended the best sailing trip ever!

"An excellent comfortable family friendly, private, rustic holiday home with full facilities, peace and quiet."
we stayed here at the height of Summer with 10 members of family, of all ages, then came back to spend the winter months which was a healthy way to spend the winter in sunshine. All amenities, accessible by car were open all year round, and the scenery everywhere is breathtaking. We felt happy and accepted, nothing was too much trouble and it was lovely being far enough away without being cut off from busy resorts that do not suit us. Many pleasant walks in the almond orchards and fruit trees, the colours were amazing, and the locals friendly.
Hi Annie - in the summer your family were fantastic guests taking care of the pool, plants and leaving the house immaculate. The winter months can be a lot more challenging with sometimes heavy rain and high winds and we greatly appreciated coming home to our house in such good condition - you truly treated as a home - thank you. You integrated really well with our Spanish neighbours and they miss you! Come again soon - kindest regards Harriet and Paul
