The Crete region

Located in the Aegean Sea Crete is Greece's largest island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean and marks the boundary between Europe, Asia and Africa. With its wonderful blue flag beaches, friendly people and an average summer temperature of 26°c it makes Crete the perfect Mediterranean destination for you to enjoy a holiday in the sun. The island has everything to offer: mountainous landscapes, beautiful beaches and rocky coves, beautiful towns and charming villages, excellent food and ruins of the Minoan Civilization.
THE CLIMATE
The temperate Mediterranean climate of Crete shows itself by the mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. East Crete is drier and warmer than West Crete, with the result that Chania being in the west is a lot greener than the desert like areas in the east. There is a similar difference between the north coast and south coast, with the south coast being drier and warmer. Crete has an average of over 300 days of sunshine a year.

HISTORY
Crete is the birthpalce of Zeus, and was the centre of Minoan civilization. Known history in Crete starts during the Neolithic ages. The beginning of the Minoan Period (2600-1100BC) coincides with the beginning of the Bronze Age. The Minoansestablished a naval empire in the Mediterranean during this period. Crete was occupied at 67 BC by the Romans. Cortys became the capital of the province of Crete. Crete becomes part of the Byzantine Empire from 325 AD to 824 AD. The Arab occupation of Crete was a thorn in Byzantium's side and they often tried to retake it, without success. The unsuccessful campaigns came to end in 962 when the Byzantine general Fokas captured Crete after fierce battles. This marked the beginning of the Second Byzantine period of Crete, which ended at 1204. During the Fourth Crusade, Crete was sold to the Venetians. In 1898, with the intervention of then Great Powers, Crete was autonomous state. Crete remained autonomous until 1913 when it united with Greece.
The Almirida area
Within 15 mins by car of the villa is the seaside village of Kalives with shops & tavernas. Here the beach curves round at the end by a small harbour.
The town of Chania isa typical Venetian town with a with its picturesque harbour with quaint streets lined by the many shops where you can buy gifts and leather goods. Chania also has a large selection of tavernas to choose from. From the harbour you can take one of the many boat trips to see the delights of the sea in a glass bottom boat, or maybe you would prefer to visit the museums and the Cathedral.
The town of Rethymno has a Venetian Fortress and an old Turkish quarter with mosques and minarets.
Heraklion, the capital of Crete, is approximately a two hour drive by car and is the fifth largest city in Greece. The Archaeological Museum here houses the most important collection of Minoan art and artefacts in the world. Near to Heraklion is the archaeological site of Knossos, the largest of the Minoan palaces. This thrived over three and a half thousand years ago at the centre of a highly sophisticated island wide civilization.
On the Akrotiri peninsulais is Stavros, where the sea is really calm due to the almost completely enclosed circular bay, and it is gently shelving sand, excellent for children. On the far side of the bay the mountainside rises, and this is where the climax of the film ‘Zorba the Greek’ was filmed. Also on this peninsula are some monasteries, should these be to your taste, and near Soudais the Allied War Cemetery, where are the graves of many of those that died in the Battle of Crete.
Lake Kournas is Crete’s only freshwater lake, and is small and shallow. Its appearance can vary a lot depending on when you visit – its colour changing as the sun moves round, its size changing according to the time of year. Rethymnon is the third largest town in Crete and is dominated by its Venetian fortress, which can be visited, as can the harbour. It also has museums, the beach, shops and tavernas.
BEACHES
Crete has many beautiful and impressive sandy beaches, some only accessible by boat (trips are available). Falassarna, Elefonisi & Balos/Gram Voussa all being well worth a visit, and we are sure you will find many more.
SPORT
Pony Trekking and Horse Riding – various levels of both are available, from beginner to advanced. These activities usually take place either earlier or later in the day to avoid the heat of the day.
Golf– there are plans to build several golf courses on the island. Currently the only opportunity for golfers is the 9 hole course at Porto Elounda Resort, Elounda.
Diving and Snorkelling– the warm and crystal clear sea make excellent conditions for these. Snorkelling equipment can be hired or bought locally. Scuba Diving is only permitted between dawn and sunset in defined coastal areas. Local diving excursions will take you there.
Windsurfing and Canoeing– these can be hired locally in Almirida.
