The Costa de Almeria region

The Costa de Almeria is a region of unique beauty and has until recently been southern Spain´s undiscovered gem. The long stretches of quiet beaches are one of the reasons this area has become a top destination for Spanish and British holidaymakers.

A vibrant mix of residential and holiday complexes, golf courses and unchanged towns and villages stretch out along the coastline; the area is renowned for its seafood restaurants.

The Almerimar / Portofino Complex area

Almerimar is o­ne of the few modern, purpose-built, coastal resorts in Europe where the rainfall is scarce.It boasts 13km of wide, sandy beaches and offers bars, hotels, shopping arcades and night-life.

The town has a 1,000 berth marina and a yacht club. Sailing and windsurfing are possible all year round and tuition is available for the novice. The clear, Mediterranean water makes it an excellent venue for snorkelling and scuba-diving. Fishingis also popular - the local industry brings in large catches of tuna. For the golfers amongst you there is Almerimar Golf course nearby & La Envia a little further away.

Almerimar has a Port-Marina and a fishing harbour. More people each year are discovering the beaches, the sun and the natural beauty of this area. If you are looking for a relaxed way of life, free from stress, in a healthy environment, then Almerimar is for you, but if you fancy a bit of adventure and a dose of adrenalin, it's o­nly an hour and a half’s drive from the snows of the Sierra-Nevada Ski Resort and mountains, where activities like hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, and cycling are just some of the other options to skiing.

The Campo de Golf Almerimar has established itself as one of the most popular on the Almería Coast,Opened in 1976 was designed by Gary Player and Rob Kirby. The Golf Course combines water hazards and palm trees
with wide fairways and lush vegetation; they create spots of singular beauty. In the beginning the Golf Course had 18-holes with Par 72. In the year 2005 the Golf Course was extended with another 9-holes to a generous golf course with 27-holes, which opens versatile play possibilities for the golf players.

The Campo de Golf Almerimar has 27-holes on a surface of approx. 802.000 m2, embedded into a beautiful landscape delicately by its singular beauty with palms and lakes, with the marvellous Mediterranean climate of Andalusia. As the only golf course with 27-holes in the province of Almeria it offers enormous play possibilities and challenges. The golf course has a generous practise area with chipping green with 3 exercise holes,
exercise shelters, and a putting green with 9 exercise holes. Lovers of this sport will enjoy the wide fairways of the Golf Course. The Campo de Golf Almerimar offers lots of possibilities for golf players of each level. In addition, it demands also from experienced golfers a high measure of concentration, it can also be mastered from beginners quite well. Obstacles - like the water surfaces and the skilfully placed bunkers - can be well played. Bunkers and small ponds very well guard the greens and the fairways seem to be like carpets. It has wide tree lined fairways, and large greens, which are well maintained and fast to play on. There are water features at several holes. The 100 metre over the lake shot to reach the hole 1, with Par 3, makes it a challenging hole on the course. The lush vegetation affords a pleasant oasis-style feel to a round as the palm trees and lakes create spots of spectacular beauty.

As well as year round activities such as golf, diving and horse riding, during the summer months there are a wide range of organized activities, live music, flamenco, quiz nights, volley ball competitions and village fiestas. As in most Mediterranean countries, children are welcome just about every where. For younger children, there are many playgrounds dotted along the beach as well as organized activity groups supervised by professional nannies.

For those looking for an active holiday there is much to do. There is a full range of watersports including jet ski-ing, canoeing, water ski-ing, sailing, big game fishing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and scuba diving.

Also in the winter months there is skiing and snowboarding available in the Sierra Nevada mountains, situated just 1 hour drive from the beach.

For those interested in wildlife and in that we mean flora and fauna, not a heavy night hitting the bars – you’ll find a lot to enjoy without going very far, in fact, the region includes some of the most unique and varied wild life habitats in the whole of western Europe. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park and The Sierra Alhamilla Mountains are interesting and rewarding areas for the wild life enthusiast; over half of the 8000 species of plants native to Spain are common in Andalucia, including 150 species which are unique to the region. Many of the plants that are indigenous to Andalucia grow only in the arid areas of Andalucia.
