The Costa de Almeria region
Almeria has a sub-tropical climate being the Andalucian city with the most hours of sunshine per year and the highest temparatures in Europe. Winter tempartures are mild, sometimes rising to 20 degrees in January. This is one of the most unspoilt areas in southern Spain with its very own natural park the Cabo de Gata Nijar.
A great part of Almeria's economy is based on agriculture. The great sea of plastic, in the west of the region, which can be seen from the air when flying in are in fact greenhouses which produce tons of fruit & vegetables. More than 70 percent of produce is exported to the rest of Europe. Guided tours to the inside of the exciting greenhouse world are available to children and adults.
Some of the many places of interest to visit nearby are Mini Hollywood in the Tabernas desert - location of many famous westerns, the Alhambra Palace (2 1/2 hrs drive) and the Sierra Nevada ski mountains (2 hrs drive).
Almerimar / Laguna Beach, Almerimar area
Almerimar, just 40 mins drive from Almeria airport has one of Spain's largest marinas with 1400 berths and a fishing harbour surrounded by many bars, restaurants and cafes. This becomes a wonderful family gathering area in the evenings where there are many different restaurants, English (with children's menus) and Spanish tapas bars at very reasonable prices. Chinese restaurants are even an option.
The beach, although very hot during the day mid summer, becomes a family "picnic" in the evenings with a wonderful relaxing atmosphere.
A 27 hole golf course designed by Gary Player, is just 5 mins drive from the Laguna Beach complex with golf hire and buggie facilities. There also excellent water sport facilities available on Lake Victoria beside the complex.
With the Sierra Nevada mountain range only 2 hours drive away, it is possible to ski in the morning and soak up the afternoon sun back in Almerimar. Almeria's record of sunshine gives it the title of being the Andulucian city with the most hours of sunshine per year!
Roquestas de Mar, just 30 mins away, is a more lively town with a fantastic water park and miles of golden sand.
In Tabernas, under an hour's drive into the mountains, you can visit Mini Hollywood which was the location of the filming of many spagetti westerns.
A tourist information centre is very nearby to assist you in many more sights and activities.
Laguna Beach is situated just two minutes walk from the beach and promenade leading to the marina where you will find bars, restaurants, shops and cafes.
