The Costa de Almeria region
Almeria is popular for its weather, boasting the lowest rainfall and the highest hours of sunshine with an average daily temperature of 20°C, 12°C in winter, and 26°C in summer.
It is a Bird lover's paradise as it is an important stopover point for migrating birds on the Africa-Europe route with in excess of 2000 flamingos migrating there during spring, summer and autumn. These birds can be found approximately 6km along the coast, on the way to Roquetas. As well as Flamingos, you can find Herons, Egrets and the Hoopoe Upupa Epops, to name a few.
For people who like to ski, the Sierra Nevada is located approximately 150km North and many people joke that it is possible to ski in the morning and sunbath on the beaches in the afternoon.
Nearby resorts are Roquetas, popular for its shopping, water park and bullfighting ring which seats 8,000 spectators and Aquadulce which is popular for its beach.
Also within 40 minutes drive are 3 film sets that have now been opened to the public, Named Oasis, (formerly known as Mini Hollywood), Texas Hollywood and Western Leone. The most famous set is Mini Hollywood where hundreds of spaghetti westerns, made famous by Clint Eastwood, have been shot, which include 'A Fistful of Dollars' and 'The Magnificent Seven'.
Oasis is now a full time theme park which also includes a zoo and a large swimming pool. Texas Hollywood and Western Leone are still part time film sets but allow visitors to walk around them viewing the sets. Western Leone is famous for the films 'Once Upon A Time in the West' and 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly'. Almeria is also famous as the set of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery.
Almerimar is a pretty haven which is the perfect resort for a relaxing holiday. It is famous for its 1,000 berth marina and yacht club. Almerimar has many bars and restaurants where you can sample the traditional Spanish cuisine. Here you can enjoy a tapas with your beverage, which is a small snack given away free with an alcoholic beverage, which is customary in this part of Spain. The area is perfect for families and young children in the summer months and golfers and couples wanting a warm winter break.
For those looking to do something more than sunbathing and relaxing and prefer to be a bit more active, there is Horse riding just along the beach and a range of water sports which include canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing and scuba diving. There is also the Campo de Golf Almerimar which is a 27 hole Golf Course opened in 1976, designed by Gary Player and Rob Kirby.
