Home description
Villa Alexandra is a modern villa set just 4 minutes flat walk from the sandy beach, and excellent tavernas and shops in the village of Almyrida. This villa represents excellent value for money and books up early. Set next to an olive grove on the corner plot of a small group of villas, despite its village location, Villa Alexandra has lovely views of The White Mountains and the olive clad hillsides that surround Almyrida.
The villa has been designed in order to maximise the outdoor living area, and therefore has terraces and balconies with a choice of sun or shade. The warm and friendly Greek owners, Spiros and Christina, have furnished the villa throughout with matching furniture made from the same warm coloured wood as the built-in wardrobes, kitchen cupboards, bathroom cabinets, and doors. The bathroom and shower room are finished to a very high standard with beautiful pale terracotta and light peach tiles.
Villa Alexandra and its sister villa (Villa Lydia) that we also book, are perfect for either families or couples who like to be independent but not tied to a car for getting around. The two villas can be booked together by large groups or families who would like to be near to each other yet value their privacy. These villas are ideal for those of you who would like to have a drink with your meals out and not have to worry about driving home!

The Crete region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Alexandra is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Almerida area
The heart of the lovely village of Almyrida is only 250m from Villa Alexandra and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, an off-license and the Villas Crete Holidays Tourist office owned and run by Frankie Miles. Frankie will be your local advisor offering 24/7 assistance if required. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 30 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a free copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles (as featured in the November 2008 issue of "Greece Magazine") comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.

Further details indoors: All modern comforts have been provided for at Villa Alexandra including a TV, DVD and CD players, a washing machine, a hair-dryer and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms and the living room. For the cooler nights at the start and end of the season there is a fireplace in the lounge, and the a/c units also double up as heaters. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater. The modern kitchen/dining area is fully equipped and includes, a ceramic hob and built in oven, a cooker hood, a large fridge/freezer, a microwave oven, a coffee maker, a kettle, a sandwich toaster, and a dining table and chairs which seat 4. All the appliances are in matching stainless steel.
The living room has a front door and a set of double doors that open out onto the covered front terrace, which wraps around the villa to incorporate the BBQ area. Both of the bedrooms have doors which open out onto a balcony which overlooks the pool and has views to The White Mountains and Villa Lydia (which we also book). There is a comfortable fold-out sofa bed in the living room which can be used as sleeping for 1 extra person. As there is only 1 step from the parking area and the pool terrace into the villa, the sofa bed in the lounge would be ideal for the elderly or less abled who perhaps cannot manage the 17 steps to access the upstairs bedrooms. There is a downstairs shower room can be used by anyone sleeping in the lounge. The thoughtful owners have provided books and games including a chess set for entertainment purposes.
Further details outdoors: In front of the villa is a pool terrace which has lovely sandy coloured non-slip crazy paving, sun-loungers and umbrellas. All around the pool terrace and the villa are a large number of traditional clay pots and flowerbeds that have been planted with conifers, roses, palms, purple solanum, and a mandarin tree. The villa is a pretty pale yellow colour with white aluminium doors, windows and shutters. Under a covered archway, next to a flowerbed of mature roses, is the south facing front terrace which has a wooden bench, a table and 4 director’s chairs. This terrace leads around to the shady east side of the villa, which is covered by a pergola and has a sink and a large BBQ made from natural stone and brick. The BBQ terrace has a wooden dining table and bench, and is next to a mature fig tree. For the younger members of the family, on the west side of the villa there is a swing and a see-saw to play on.
