Home description
Villa Maria is uniquely situated on a cliff-top overlooking the village, small fishing harbour and crescent shaped sandy beach of Almyrida. With its elevated position, panoramic views of the sea and surrounding countryside of undulating olive covered hills can be enjoyed from the large verandah, pool and mature garden. A small pathway leads down to the beach below, and despite being only 4 minutes by foot to the shops and excellent tavernas in the village, Villa Maria has the feel of a more rural location. Surrounded by olive groves at the end of a dirt track, no other house overlooks this very private villa.
The light and airy interiors are very spacious and have typically Cretan timbered ceilings and locally made furniture. The outside area has many areas for either sun or shade and the garden is filled with a large variety of beautiful Mediterranean flowers and trees. One of the outside dining areas is shaded by a pergola that is completely covered in fuchsia bougainvillea.
We highly recommend Villa Maria to those looking for a more traditional island villa with privacy, a fantastic position above the sea and fabulous views whilst being conveniently close to the amenities in Almyrida.

The Crete region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Maria is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Almerida area
The heart of the lovely village of Almyrida is only 280m from Villa Maria and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, the Villas Crete Holidays Tourist office owned and run by Frankie Miles, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 30 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a free copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.

Further details indoors: Villa Maria has traditionally styled interiors with simple Cretan style pine furnishings, matching kitchen cabinets, breakfast bar and timbered ceilings, all of which combine to create a comfortable home. The villa is light and airy with a large picture window in the living room to capture the views. Villa Maria is an immensely popular villa with many repeat guests, and is the first villa that I ever worked with here on Crete. Over the years the modern facilities have been regularly added to and improved and now include satellite TV, a DVD player, a very large kitchen inventory, a washing machine, a microwave oven, a new large corner bath in the en-suite bathroom, and air-conditioning. For those cooler nights at the start and end of the season there is a fireplace and the A/C units double up as heaters. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater.
Further details outdoors: Spacious interiors open out onto the covered verandah and pool terrace which are furnished with a dining table, chairs and sun-beds. A further eating out area with two long marble topped tables and cushioned benches is delightfully enveloped in stunning fuchsia bougainvillea and surrounded by flowerbeds that are filled with roses, hibiscus and a mature lemon tree. The beautiful private garden has a grassed area with a central circular patio paved with flagstones and bordered by hibiscus, pomegranate and quince trees. This area is ideal for young children to play safely, or for quietly reading a book on one of the sun-beds whilst taking in the magnificent views and observing the boats and activities in the village below. A separate barbecue area is shaded by a tiled pergola and the gated driveway and private parking area is lined with flowering oleanders, dates palms and fig trees.
