Home description
2 kms from the lovely sandy cove around which the village of Almirida is strung, brings you to Villa Kallisto, its brazen clean lines and uncluttered grey facades making a bold statement of modern architecture yet sitting surprisingly at ease amongst the olive trees. Far removed from ancient Cretan dwellings, Nectarios and Penny commissioned their new villa to showcase the style and taste of a new age and guests staying here will be lucky enough to discover the ideas behind the design.
On arrival you will immediately begin to appreciate the concept of the villa as, with all three bedrooms on the ground floor, it requires minimal effort to unload your luggage and hang holiday clothes in the spacious wardrobes. Sliding glass doors open from each ‘boutique hotel’ inspired bedroom onto a patio by the pool area – perfect for that first dip. All three spacious bedrooms (two double and one twin) have sleek en-suite shower rooms equipped with hydro massage showers, & hair dryers .

The Crete region
Fringed by long sandy beaches, rocky coves and towering cliffs, the surprisingly green but frequently rugged scenery is splashed with patches of wild flowers. Crete is haphazardly scattered with Minoan palaces, mosques and minarets of Venetian and Turkish conquerors. For all that, lingering longest in the memory, will be the hospitality of its people who understand the real meaning of filoxenia, the Greek word for 'love of strangers', still a way of life in rural Crete. Here is a land for all temperaments, blending fascinating layers of history with a proud and thriving folklore in a powerfully beautiful setting.
Almerida area
22 km east of Chania, this pretty little seaside village has two gently shelving sandy beaches fringed by sleepy waterside tavernas as well as a small fishing harbour and little rocky coves, with the sea a marvellous melange of colours from deep aquamarine to a pastel turquoise. A decade ago Almirida was just a fishing village and a weekend watering hole for local Greeks from Chania. Times change of course and Almirida has slowly grown into a small resort with a number of villas, apartments and quite a few hotels. Curiously enough though, the Greeks still come at weekends, the fishermen still fish and the waterside tavernas still have a laid back unhurried atmosphere where time is of no consequence and you can sit for hours lingering over a meal.
The village now has several mini markets as well as a bakers, an internet cafe and a couple of quite trendy bars. Mountain bikes can be hired locally and on the beach you can rent sun beds. The rolling wooded countryside behind Almirida is some of the most beautiful in Crete and a walkers paradise, especially in April and May when spring flowers carpet the landscape in colourful abandon. If you are looking for exciting nightlife Almirida is definitely not a good choice but for a quiet relaxing holiday by the sea, it certainly takes some beating.
How to get there
There are two Airports on Crete, Chania (CHQ) on the west of the island and Heraklion (HER) on the east. It takes approx 50 mins from Chania and an hour and a half to drive from Heraklion.

Guestbook for Villa Kallisto, Almerida
Andrew Munro - Aug 2009 "We found the mineral water pool to be very good and more could be made of this as an alternative to chlorine. Penny was marvellous! Keep up the good work!"
Penelope, Nectarios and all the family gave us a great welcome and did everything they possibly could to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. our reps were charming and friendly, with good advice regarding new Tavernas. Diane and her team at the airport ensured at the end of our stay that our check-in was carried out with the minimum of delay. This very personal touch will bring us back to Crete with Freelance as often as we can in the years ahead. Another Great Holiday - well done Freelance!
Villa Kallisto What a wonderful holiday we had at Villa Kallisto! It was brilliant and would recommend it to anyone. We also had first class service from Diane and Ann in Crete. Both very helpful and professional. We had a bit of an issue with the car which they soon sorted. Very happy and will travel with you again soon . Thank you. Karen Hunt, Jul 2008
The Levitts - Villa Kallisto - Jun 2008 This is the third time we have holidayed with Freelance and I am hoping not our last, your quality of service is unrivaled. Special mention needs to be made about Penny (owner of Villa Kallisto) who every year makes our stay just that bit more special, she is kind, considerate and nothing is too much trouble.
