The Andalucia region

Andalucia is a walker's and cyclists paradise with amazing light for photography.

Wildlife includes the illusive genet, wild boar, polecats and hares.

Birdlife abounds with Hoopoes, Bee Eaters, Bonelli Eagles, Golden Orioles and Red Kites.

The Romans and the Moors both left their mark on Andalucia; the Alhambra Palace in Granada is perhaps the most well known example. History is ingrained in the towns, villages and countryside of the region - in the architecture, the fountains and the food.

The people are friendly and delighted that you would choose to visit their region.

Summers are long and hot with practically guaranteed sunshine. Spring and Autumn are delightful with long growing seasons. Winter can be very cold in comparison!

Priego de Cordoba has won one of the top awards for the quality of its olive oil and many olive mills welcome visitors to learn about the process and tempt them with ecological hand creams, soaps and other olive oil products in addition to the amazing extra virgin oil of the region.

Almedinilla

There are numerous Saint’s Days, National bank holidays and local holidays – essentially, the Andalucians love a fiesta! We are pleased to find out what is going on at the time of your visit but in advance please visit:

www.fiestasdeandalucia.com

Almedinilla itself is incredibly proud of its Roman heritage. Visit the excavations at the roman villa and the museum. The pretty little town even has its own full sized colliseum!

"Beautiful peaceful location, warm & wellcoming hosts & a lovely casita."

We had a really lovely few days at casa girasol and although our visit was short, the four days felt so much longer in such a peaceful and relaxing environment. The casita is very clean, comfortable and well equipped and Debbie & Jay make every effort to ensure that you have everything you need, providing loads of information on interesting places to visit and where to get great tapas. We shared a delicious meal with them as we arrived on a Sunday when all the shops were shut and it was a veritable feast. We can't wait to go back to explore more of beautiful Andalusia.

We are the lucky ones - we have such interesting guests who really want to make the most of this very special little corner of Andalucia. Come back soon!

Thank you so much for the beautiful watercolour you painted of the mass of marigolds outside the casita during your stay - the bright sunny colours have pride of place for future visitors to see. You must come back to see the sunflowers!!!

"A wonderful start to the New Year - in Andalucia"

We celebrated the arrival of 2013 by eating 12 grapes as the twelve chimes rang in the New Year. We were included with our hosts and their friends for a meal in the lovely casa.

Winter weather was bright and sunny most days, with a brilliant blue sky. Mornings were frosty and cold, the evenings sharp with a wonderful clear, starry sky. Our log box was filled daily with wood and kindling for the excellent log burning stove – which very quickly warmed the whole of the casita. However, most lunches were eaten on the patio in the sun.We experienced olive picking the local harvest around the casita, with its amazing views across many olive groves to the Sierras beyond.

Places we visited:
After a one and a half hour drive up to the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada, we sat in the sun, watching skiers and snowboarders enjoying the slopes – from the comfort of an outdoor restaurant. The Fortaleza de la Mota castle at Alcala La Real was well worth an extended visit to see a heritage site undergoing impressive restoration, with its history brought to life by an audio stick and many slide shows in the various towers and main buildings. Another trip was to the long beach of Lake Iznajar. We were also recommended some very good value 'Menus del Dia' at each of the places we visited.

This was a little gem of a place to stay, with everything we needed to be warm and comfortable. There was a very good range of TV programmes; we were even able to select our own region of the UK to see the local news at home. Debbie and Jay could not have been more friendly, helpful and hospitable. We have already booked for another stay this September – to try out their plunge pool, when the sun is somewhat higher in the sky and the nearby fiestas are in full swing!

Wonderful to have you here and share something of this very special little corner of Andalucia with you. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to Casa Girasol in the late summer - if you thought that winter was great here, just wait until you experience the real Spanish summer fiestas!

"Friendly, rural retreat"

The owners freely admit the property is a work in progress hence its lower than average price but the casita has been completed (even a teapot was added recently!) to a very high standard. The setting in vast olive groves is delightful with views across the local farms to the distant hills. It is particularly beautiful at dawn. The neighbours are welcoming to strangers and a walk through the hills and along the quite roads is a good excuse to air one's Spanish phrases. The only downside of the village is that the local dogs can get noisy and greet the passing herds of goats with loud barks - it is the countryside after all! The owners' own cats and dog also like to make the acquaintance of guests and love to be fussed.
There are plenty of fascinating local villages and towns within easy reach with a full range of facilities and sites to see. Opening hours can be a little confusing but tourist officers are very knowledgable and patient. Major tourist venues such as Cordoba and Granada are also near enough for day trips.
Do have supper on arrival with Debbie and Jay. The local produce served is a real treat as is the opportunity to swap travel tales and experiences. We quickly felt we had made new friends and were delighted to be invited along with some neighbours to a cheese festival nearby. The minor problems we had whilst at the casita, such as the need for a new battery for the clock, were immediately rectified with humour and grace. We felt able to ask for help from locating a laundry to identifying a gecko!
Do look at their web site which is an very accurate portrayal of the property and their facebook page and twitter account for a taste of life at Casa Girasol. I'm sad that I don't seem to be able to load my own photos on to this site to back up our comments!

it was so lovely to meet you both - and thanks for showing US the way to the cheese fiesta!

"Perfection Revisited"

This is the second time we have stayed with the delightful and witty hosts at Casa Girasol. I am happy to confirm that our impressions of Girasol are the same as our first visit. perfection...with improvements!! A large plunge pool has been added and as we were leaving a new wood burner was to be installed, burning fragrant olive wood. A great addition for the winter...making a cozy retreat even more cosy.
This is a great central location to strike out to Granada, Seville, Cordoba...all easy day trips away, plus the people watching opportunities in the beautiful local villages while sipping on the local wine and sampling a wide variety of tapas.

As always a pleasure - and grateful thanks for your FB support
