About this location
The Pays de la Loire region
The Loire area derives much of its fame from the large number of historically interesting buildings and towns that exist in the area.
For hundreds of years it was the region where the French aristocracy would come to relax and replenish energy reserves depleted by constant warring with the English.
The Loire area has extensive forests that provided the nobility with excellent hunting. To guarantee their comfort while in the area, they constructed opulent chateaux, many of which are still standing and can be visited today.
The river itself has now been designated a world heritage site - a testament to the importance placed on the conservation of the wetland habitat which borders the longest river in France.
Saumur is an ancient, bustling market town, full of historic and elegant townhouses. It straddles a strategic and beautiful stretch of the River Loire. The Chateau de Saumur, the local wines, the sandy banks of the river, the equestrian traditions and historical sites, all the threads that typify the Loire region seem to be gathered together in Saumur. For those that find the town centre a little too comfortable, there are many trogolodite caves and dwellings to contemplate nearby.
There are many activities which can be enjoyed in the area. For those who enjoy cycling there is a huge network of cycle paths. These lead you down leafy country tracks or small roads and provide another way to enjoy the magnifent local countryside. There are many marked walks that can be enjoyed in the local forests. Nearby is an equestrian centre where horse-riding can be enjoyed. For those who like golf there is a 12 hole golf course just the other side of Saumur in a pretty town called St Hilaire de Florent. This is also the site of the famous Gratien Meyer sparkling wine and a wine tasting here could replace the normal 25th hole! In both Saumur & Bourgeuil there are riverside water parks set alongside the Loire where you can swim or hire dingys or canoes.
La Grange & La Forge lie at the heart of the famous Chinon, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Bourgueil and Saumur Champigny wine-growing areas which are all within easy reach. Wine tastings are readily arranged on request.
In the immediate vicinity of La Grange, on the outskirts of Allonnes, lies the renowned Parc de Maupassant which boasts a fine selection of gardens including a magnificent rose garden and a world famous peony collection. In neighbouring Brain sur Allonnes there is a medieval botanical garden with borders that feature over 600 varieties of medicinal and gastronomic plants and herbs. Throughout history these have been used for a variety of purposes including poisoning, very occasional healing and fairly frequent forays into witchcraft. Also in Brain are located world-famous caves where aspiring artists daubed in paleolithic times.
Allonnes (only 1.5 kms away) has a range of small shops including bread shops, a butcher, traiteur and, most importantly, a supermarket that is even open on Sunday mornings! It also has a garage, banks, hairdressers, & bars.

"Lovely gites, well located, with lots to see and do nearby."
We took both gites for our extended family group, which included toddlers, teenagers and grandpa, as well as our dog. The swimming pool was a big hit with the children, who also loved having their very own football pitch. The dog loved the large fenced in area. We had some lovely evenings looking out across the countryside and watching the sunsets, stars, owl and bats. The gites were very well equipped, and it was easy to have all of us eating together in one gite. We also appreciated the fact that there were lots of bathrooms. It is very easy to get around, and we loved our trip to Chenonceau. For families we'd all very much recommend the troglodyte zoo - one of the best zoos we've ever visited. Judy and Mark and family were excellent hosts.

"Séjour agréable dans un gîte spacieux"
Bien équipé pour une famille ou chacun peut avoir son intimité et son indépendance tout en pouvant partager des moments de vie de groupe dans un salon et salle à manger confortables. A l'extérieur, le jardin est un espace ouvert sur la campagne environnante.

"The perfect break"
We had the most wonderful time. A beautiful area perfect for cycling with quiet country lanes and off road tracks. The heated 12m pool is great for a few lengths or just cooling off - we had 30 degrees each day! Cycling to the local market was the best day out.. Mark and Judy think of everything!

"Happiness wrapped up in a fabulous package."
Our party consisted of six adults and three children ranging in age from 4 to 2 years. Our host and hostess had thought of everything to make our stay as stress free as possible. From hairdryers and plugs located near mirrors to an endless supply of barbecue fuel. Plenty of bathrooms and very well equiped kitchens. The WIFI meant that son could catch up on cricket scores and daughter, son in law and daughter in law could check emails.
The swimming pool was enjoyed by everyone, particularly the grandchildren and even when the weather was a little overcast we had great fun in the games room. Some of the table tennis matches got a little serious! There was ample space for the children to run around and they made great use of the swings and slides. Safety was paramount and the adults were able to relax as everything was fenced off and we were able to see the children from the gites as they played. It was lovely watching them wandering in and out of the gites visiting their cousins.
Our hosts, Judy and Mark were very welcoming and always there to lend a hand if needed. They were extremely helpful with advice on interesting places to visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and would certainly recommend Les Volets Rouge to friends.

"Fell in Love With The Place"
Having never visited this area of France before we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. The standard of the furnishings and the kitting-out of the kitchen were really outstanding. We had brought a number of utensils with us but were pleasantly surprised not to have to use them. The hosts, Mark and Judy really get the balance right between being helpful and leaving well alone - they will leave you to it or welcome you with open arms should you want to be a bit more sociable! They can also organise wine-tasting which is not to be avoided. The use of the games room/utility area is a real bonus as was the private garden for our dogs. We absolutely loved this place and are very sad not to be able to return there this year.

"We will be back very soon"
Our arrival was met by a very cheerful and charming landlady who offered us a cup of English tea after our long Journey. The Gite was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Far better then any others I have come across in France. The dishwasher, television ect. were fully explained on operation. All rooms are on suite. The village has a petrol station and good shop for all esentials and there is a butrchers and bread shop within walking distance. The Gite is sited away from the village, so sits in very quiet surrondings, but is close to Saumur where you can have an excellent private boat trip with a guide to explain the history of the area. Dont forget to go to the Zoo, it is brilliant. Mark and Judy are happy to advise on best routes and advise on places to vist, eat etc. My daughter loved the pool !! We will be back as soon as we get the chance.

"Beautifully renovated and well appointed gite in peaceful surroundings"
Following easy directions provided when booking, you will find La Grange in a peaceful quiet area outside Allonnes - itself only about 7k from the Chateau town of Saumur. Mark and Judy provided a warm welcome and Judy went on to make sure that we knew where everything was before leaving us to settle in with our complimentary bottle of local wine.
The accommodation is first rate and each of the three en-suite bedrooms is roomy and comfortable, just right for a large family.
The Loire Valley area is steeped in history and you can rarely travel far without coming across yet another vineyard offering wine tasting experiences, in between visiting Chateaux.
