The Pays de la Loire region
The Loire area derives much of its fame from the large number of historically interesting buildings and towns that exist in the area.
For hundreds of years it was the region where the French aristocracy would come to relax and replenish energy reserves depleted by constant warring with the English.
The Loire area has extensive forests that provided the nobility with excellent hunting. To guarantee their comfort while in the area, they constructed opulent chateaux many of which are still standing and can be visited today.
The river itself has now been designated a world heritage site - a testament to the importance placed on the conservation of the wetland habitat which borders the longest river in France.
Saumur is an ancient, bustling market town, full of historic and elegant townhouses. It straddles a strategic and beautiful stretch of the River Loire. The Chateau de Saumur, the local wines, the sandy banks of the river, the equestrian traditions and historical sites, all the threads that typify the Loire region seem to be gathered together in Saumur. For those that find the town centre a little too comfortable, there are many trogolodite caves and dwellings to contemplate nearby.
There are many activities which can be enjoyed in the area. For those who enjoy cycling there is a huge network of cycle paths. These lead you down leafy country tracks or small roads and provide another way to enjoy the magnifent local countryside. There are many marked walks that can be enjoyed in the local forests. Nearby is an equestrian centre where horse-riding can be enjoyed. For those who like golf there is a 12 hole golf course just the other side of Saumur in a pretty town called St Hilaire de Florent. This is also the site of the famous Gratien Meyer sparkling wine and a wine tasting here could replace the normal 25th hole! In both Saumur & Bourgeuil there are riverside water parks set alongside the Loire where you can swim or hire dingys or canoes.
La Grange & La Forge lie at the heart of the famous Chinon, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Bourgueil and Saumur Champigny wine growing areas which are all within easy reach. Wine tastings are readily arranged on request.
In the immediate vicinity of La Grange, on the outskirts of Allonnes, lies the renowned Parc de Maupassant which boasts fine walks and a fine selection of gardens including a magnificent rose garden and a world famous peony collection. In neighbouring Brain sur Allonnes there is a medieval botanical garden with borders that feature over 600 varieties of medicinal and gastronomic plants and herbs. Throughout history these have been used for a variety of purposes including poisoning, very occasional healing and fairly frequent forays into witchcraft. Also in Brain are located world-famous caves where aspiring artists daubed in paleolithic times.
Allonnes (only 1.5 kms away) has a range of small shops including bread shops, a butcher, traiteur and, most importantly, a supermarket that is even open on Sunday mornings! It also has a garage, banks, hairdressers, & bars.

"An ideal base for exploring the Saumur area"
We were impressed both by the first class accommodation at La Forge and by the warm welcome we received from Judy and Mark. We had a great time exploring the area and wish we could have stayed longer. If you are searching for a really comfortable place to stay in the area with a high standard of amenities you need look no further than La Forge.

"A wonderful relaxing holiday in fantastic accommodation"
La forge was very clean, spacious and well equipped to meet the needs and expectations of our family. Judy, Mark and their family went out of their way to be welcoming and friendly and gave lots of good advice on what to see and do in the area. The swimming pool was especially welcome after a hot day sightseeing. We enjoyed the wine tasting that Mark kindly arranged and took us to and we also found the troglodite caves and chateaus very interesting. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, with good accommodation in an area that offers plenty of things to entertain you then La Forge should tick all your boxes. We would recommend it to anyone. One word of warning the local bread shop sells absolutely fantastic cakes so if you are on a diet please avoid at all costs - we couldn't resist.

"Peaceful, relaxing and friendly retreat in a beautiful location"
We had a two hour delay on our journey due to a RTA at Rouen and were hot, tired and hungry when we arrived; Judy and Mark were there to greet us with a lovely warm welcome and a (more importantly) a good bottle of red. Just what the doctor ordered! they had also introduced us to their local caterer, by e-mailing a menu, and the food was waiting when we arrived, absolutely delicious and very good value for money. Later in the week we met one of their friends, a local wine producer, Jerome; he was absolutely charming and his wine was good too. The week went too quickly, despite the poor weather. The zoo at Doue is not to be missed and suits all ages, we took our 12 year old and my 79yr old mother, and the day was enjoyed by all. Le Panorama cafe overlooking the Chateau at Saumur provides hearty snacks, good service and fabulous views of the Loire. There are so many stunning Chateau to visit we will need to go back to see them all; thats my excuse! The weekly market in Bourgeuil is worth a visit as is the Pizzeria/Creperie. The pool and games room were a bonus and much appreciated by our son Adam as was the companionship of the Porter family crew.

"Great autumn break"
The location and standard of the accommodation was great. Judy and Mark are on site, and are great hosts. There is so much to do around the property, with the forest within walking distance, and the Loire vineyards a short drive. I would not hesitate to return, either on our own, or taking the additional property with family. The only downside was the local vet, who charged an extortionate price for the pet passport. But we know for next time!

"You relax immedietly amongst wonderful surroundings with super facilities for all the family"
The two gites are well situated for access to the pool and seeting areas. There is a games room and large open space which was ideal for our teenages. The pool is a good size with plenty of seeting inclosed by a railed white fence for safety, The kitchen was well equipped with a dishwasher, good sized fridge and cooker. The bedrooms were spacious with excellent on-suite facilities. Spaciuos living area with double doors leading out to the garden. The shops are close by in Allonnes, you can cycle or 2 mins by car. The owners live on site and are very friendly. They wellcomed us with drinks on the first evening and went out of there way to make us feel relaxed, helping us with bikes advise on where to visit and eat. There are local vineyards to visit, a super local market, many wonderful Chateau's and gardens, a brilliant zoo, wonderfull woody walks and Saumur with its shops cafe's and impressive Chateau.

"Good small Gite, perfect as a base for exploring"
This gite is on the small side but the most has been made of the available space. It has two good size twin bedrooms with washing facilities and a large wet-room on the first floor while the ground floor is one large open-plan kitchen/living room. The gite is in a lovely country setting with shared access to a large heated swimming pool and plenty of space for the kids to run around in safety.

"Relaxing family holiday in Loire"
Great place for a family to locate in Saumur area. Host family are very welcoming and good at providing to-do ideas. Gite is comfortable and has good facilities including a swimming pool and a barn play area for the kids. The area around is good for cycling and the roads are quiet. The local village has a pleasant patisserie and there is a local market which includes a fish stall. A boat trip down the Loire was lovely and we also enjoyed the tank museum in Saumur. Vulture feeding time at the nearby zoo provided a novel day out, if not a little gory. There are lots of small towns near by with lots of good value restaurants to explore - we like the L'Ancre Bleu in Bourgueil on market day.

"Beautifully renovated, well appointed gite in a peaceful setting"
A great place to stay. Nothing is too much trouble for hosts, Mark and Judy. We had a friendly welcome and Judy made sure that we knew where everything was. All of the three en-suite bedrooms were well equipped and spotlessly clean. Not forgetting the large heated swimming pool - shared with one other gite. The gite is in the town of Allonnes which is approx 7k from Saumur. There are good shops in the town as well as a bank and post office, and Saumur is only ten minutes down the road. The whole area is steeped in history with many places to visit, both vineyards and chateaux. We will certainly return.
