The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
There is so much to see and do in and around Alicante, however we have picked out a few must do's to give you an idea! However a good guide book for the Costa Blanca is always worth buying, just so you can get the most out of your stay.
AGOST Agost, a small village around 20km north west of Alicante has a long history of pottery manufacture and is still one of the best places in the Alicante region to buy pottery and ceramic ware. This town makes more earthenware botijos than any other spot in Spain. The authentic souvenir is the Botijo de Novia.
ALGAR WATERFALLS Buried in a jungly green valley filled with citrus and medlar groves, the water alternates between cascades and pools running between river banks covered with bourganvillea in summer. Starting at the lowest and most spectacular waterfall, you can climb up alongside the river for around 25 minutes until it becomes a mountain stream and then wade on up to the top. Bath in its various pools and waterfalls. Don't forget your swimming costumes! On the Benidorm - Callosa Road.
BENIDORM What can be said about Benidorm that hasn’t been said already? Yes it’s brash and commercialised, but also has 2 fantastic beaches, great shops, lively atmosphere, superb restaurants and nightlife plus something for everyone! The world famous Benidorm Palace http://www.benidorm-palace.com is worth a visit for a fantastic night out with a 4 course meal (including wine) and spectacular show. The old town, in between the two beaches, is well worth a visit and is full of atmospheric restaurants and tapas bars. Hard to believe that until the 1960’s Benidorm was a quiet sleepy fishing village!
ELCHE Well worth a visit is the city of Elche, just south west of Alicante, about 35 minutes drive. Over 300,000 officially protected palm trees in the city lend it a somewhat exotic air. These palms are evident on every street corner and can be especially enjoyed in the well-tended city park and just a short walk away in the Huerto del Cura (Garden of The Priest), a botanical garden in the palm forest which has now been added to the UNESCO cultural heritage list. The main attraction here is the Imperial Palm, a hermaphrodite palm tree that changes sex every 70 years and sprouted seven trunks, one of which produces dates.
JIJONA Jijona, is located in the mountains between Alicante and Alcoy and is a small town set on a hill, with remains of a medieval castle, giving unparallelled views of the Mediterranean. The drive will take approx half an hour from Alicante. Nowadays, Jijona is famous for Turron, a famous Spanish nougat made with almonds, orange blossom honey and sugar, which is traditionally eaten at Christmas. There are numerous roadside stalls where it is sold with pots of honey and even a Turron museum where you can see how it is produced. Here you can have a half hour visit and around the work shop and private museum and then sample the delights of the many different varieties of Turron in the shop. Not a visit for those watching their weight!
TABARCA ISLAND A superb day out, the tiny island of Tabarca just 10 miles south of Alicante is situated just a 30 minute ferry ride out to sea from Santa Pola. It is the only inhabited island in the Valencia region and you can catch the glass bottom boat fairly regularly from Santa Pola for around €12 adult and €9 children. You can walk around the old town and its ruins, watch birds, swim or snorkel in the crystal clear water and have lunch at one of a hndful of restaurants with views of the island and the sea. Remember to take your sun lotion!
Alicante area
Gran Alacant is a mainly residential area and therefore perfect for families - just a few miles south of the vibrant and beautiful city of Alicante and just to the north of the traditional Spanish seaside town of Santa Pola. Nestling in the hills above Alicante Bay, there are stunning views across to the city and the castle of Santa Barbara and northwards to the Crevillente mountains. The few miles distance to the airport make Gran Alacant a particularly good place to stay as you can be in your holiday rental accommodation in less than an hour from landing and, because Gran Alacant is not on the flight path, there is no aircraft noise.
Gran Alacant is a mixture of villas, townhouses and apartments on a number of different Urbanisations, all with access to swimming pools. The area is quite cosmopolitan with an interesting mixture of nationalities – mainly Spanish, British and Scandinavian own property here – yet has a typical Spanish feel. This mixture is reflected in the bars and restaurants in the area. Spanish run tapas bars, fish restaurants and pizzerias mix happily with British owned bars and restaurants. Gran Alacant has five good quality supermarkets and all less than 5 minutes drive from most of our holiday rental properties.
Gran Alacant has plenty to offer those looking for a relaxing holiday and also those looking for something a bit more active. With easy access to Alicante city and the excellent motorway network, there is plenty to see and do in the surrounding areas. Less than 40 minutes by car is the exciting Terra Mitica theme park just outside Benidorm. Also for children at Benidorm is the superb water park Aqualandia which is next to Mundomar the sea life centre.
As you would expect Gran Alacant also has pharmacies, banks (all with cash machines), panaderias (bakers), heladerias (ice cream parlours), a video/DVD rental shop, internet café, hairdressers, nail bar, petrol station and car/scooter rental agencies. Night life in Gran Alacant is low key with the emphasis on good food and good wine with more than 50 bars and restaurants to choose from.
Close to Gran Alacant, and just five minutes by car, is the typically Spanish resort of Los Arenales del Sol. Facing onto miles of sand duned beaches, cleaned each day, Los Arenales is a popular weekend destination for people from Alicante and families from all over Spain have holiday homes here. In the resort are plenty of bars and restaurants some with superb views of the sea and Alicante on the other side of the bay. During the spring and summer water sports of all types are available from the beach. For beach lovers, a lazy day at Los Arenales is highly recommended.
For walkers there are a number of clearly marked trails in the Nature Park that surrounds Gran Alacant. Birdwatchers will also enjoy following the trails as there are many species to be seen at all times of the year. A little further afield there is excellent walking near the Santa Pola lighthouse whose light can be seen most evenings from Gran Alacant.
Gran Alacant is a superb choice for basing your stay on Spain’s glorious Costa Blanca. We have an excellent choice of competitively priced, privately owned apartments, villas and townhouses for rental, all located close to swimming pools and within walking distance of a range of bars and restaurants. The immediate area has plenty offer the holidaymaker and is twenty minutes from all the attractions of the stylish city of Alicante. One of the best beaches on the Costa Blanca is on your doorstep and all the facilities you need are close at hand.
