Our 11 room apartment at the residential west end of Alhaurin el Grande was originally two apartments. The previous owners converted it to one very spacious apartment, complete with two full sized bathrooms, two terraces, both with unbroken views directly over the orange grove immediately in front of us. The lower terrace has vines growing over a frame to give protection from the sun, and the top terrace gets the sun from late morning right through until sunset.. We have four bedrooms ,the master bedroom has a king sized double bed, two of the bedrooms have double beds, and the "cool" room at the back of the apartment has twin beds . We also have a fold down double divan in the second music lounge. This makes the flat ideal from a couple right up to eight people as larger groups can enjoy the benefits of two separate terraces two full sized bathrooms and two living rooms, one with hi-fi and games tv, the other with a flat panel wall mounted tv. As we are on the western fringe of the town, we have no buildings in front of us and therefore uninterrupted views over our neighbours orange grove out to the countryside. The views are spectacular and yet from our front door you are only 50 metres away from shops and a great restaurant (La Higuera)

The Andalucia region
Alhaurin el Grande is an attractive town of some 22,000 "Alhaurinos". The town overlooks the Guadalhorce valley and is on the fringe of the Sierra de las Nieves national park. The town is flanked by two good golf courses, Lauro Golf to the east of the town and the more challenging Alhaurin Golf ( a Ballesteros designed course) just to the west of the town. The town has many festivals, but the big one, the Feria is a fabulous 4 day event, the last weekend in May. A Spanish Feria is a marvelous spectacle of colour and Andalucian passion and should be experienced at least once! The cuisine in the town is excellent, as you would expect and seafood is particularly good given the proximity to the fishing port of Malaga. We have compiled a guide of our favourite restaurants in the town, covering traditional local Spanish dishes to North African and Indian food. We also have 17 reviews (all very complimentary) from previous guests which we can e-mail to you
Alhaurin el Grande
Slightly to the north of Alhaurin lie the limestone outcrop of El Torcal and the stunning gorge at El Chorro, The Spanish "Lake District" at Ardales and the scenic drive through the Sierra de las Nieves to the stunning town of Ronda. Or if you prefer, a short drive takes you to the town of Antequera with more churches per square kilometer than any other town in Spain. For the culture vultures the three classical Andalucian cities of Granada, Seville and Cordoba are all within striking distance and are all well worth a visit (Granada with its snow topped mountains in the background is my personal favourite). The ski resort of Sol y nieve in the Sierra Nevada is a two and a half hour drive from the apartment. The ski season runs from December to April
A nice day out is to Coin our neighboring town, and over the hill to Marbella. Park under the daily market, enjoy the sights and scents of the market, and then walk down through Marbella old town towards the beach. On the way home, stop off for a coffee in the square of the "Pueblo Blanco" of Ojen. Alternatively take the 15 minute drive to the pretty town of Mijas and enjoy spectacular views down over the coast.

"A true taste of the real Spain"
Our family family wanted to sample "real Spain", away from the bustle and hustle of the main resorts yet close enough to sample these if we so wished. With 3 grown up daughters joining us for the first week and our fourth arriving from her work in Valencia the second week we needed a villa that could accommodate 6 adultsl with room to spare. This villa more than surpassed our expectations and was within 30 mins easy reach from Malaga Airport by our hire car. The rooms were spacious, very comfortable, the kitchen well equipped (with the paella pan filled to capacity feeding all six of us at times). It also had two full size bathrooms - important when 4 grown up daughters want to get ready for a night out! The tiled floors throughout the house and shutters provided respite from the heat if we needed. The lower terrace also provided shade yet allowed us to still enjoy the sights, sounds and the occasional mountain breeze and the upper terrace was ideal for the sun-worshipers among us. The town is beautiful and with an abundance of great restaurants, tapas bars and shops, there was really no need to go any further. Just a pity 2 weeks wasn't long enough to cover them all! The town is also a great base from which to explore the local areas. ElChorro Gorge, the Guadalhorce Lakes, the pretty white washed mountain top town of Mijas all got a number of visits during the fortnight together with a few visits to Marbella old town and its wonderful beach. All in all, this was a wonderful find and I'm absolutely sure we will be back again as there was so much more on our wish list that we just didn't have the time to do. Our sincere thanks to the owners, Peter and Karen, who gave so many helpful tips and suggestions and made our first and certainly not last visit a wonderful experience.

"'Experience real Spain'"
We stayed here as an extended family of 6, ages ranging from 3 to 66. We all had a truly amazing holiday, the apartment was fantastic, superbly equipped and a great location. With everything you need easily accessible, supermarkets, restaurants, bars, bakers all very close by and only a short and very enjoyable walk into the town. We stayed during the towns 'ferria' (festival) week, what an experience, the amosphere of the town was fantastic, live music, flamenco dancing, parades, fun fair. The owners have an excellent guide inside the apartment listing fab places to eat and drink and lots of information about local places to visit, we didnt have a car and certainly didnt need one, we did use the local bus service, which was very reliable, to visit other nearby towns like mijas and fuengirola. The area was also a lot cheaper. Would definetly return to orange grove. We all loved it :))

"Very enjoyable holiday"
My wife and I went here on a short vacation to celebrate our Silver Wedding Anniversary and were joined by my In-Laws, Bobby and Janie. The first thing you realize when you get there is just how accessible it is from the airport. The apartment is in an excellent area in the middle of town and the local people are extremely friendly. We used to regularly visit the local bar 'La Higuera' which serves excellent food and is a great place to sit at breakfast time and enjoy the cofee and watch the world go by. We also ate at a small tapas bar called 'Sardinia' in town and again, found the food excellent with good service. The apartment has everything you need and is very clean and tidy. It has lovely views from the two terraces. We thoroughly enjoyed the vacation and played golf at the Seve Ballesteros course 'Al Haurin' and another local course. It seems a very popular place for golfers to stay as it is has many excellent courses close by and it seemed every time we went out for a 'Shandy", we met people who were able to recommend different courses they had played and were back on a regular basis to play again. All in all, a great vacation and we will definately go back. Jim and Laraine Ardrossan

"Life changing Alhaurin"
This apartment is Spanish, in a beautiful 'real' working living Spanish town. Well equipped and comfortable the apartment is ideally located. We have fallen in love with the town and the people, so much so that my Mum now spends half her time in Alhaurin and half back home in Scotland! And is taking Spanish lessons in the town. The restaurants are varied to suit all tastes and pockets, there are excellent supermarkets, local shops, and weekly street market, and what could be better than sipping a coffee at one of the many café's people watching. Juan the local taxi driver is excellent, full of local information, kind and considerate, and yes he really is available 24/7 - invaluable for peace of mind. The beaches of the coast, and city shopping in Malaga are only a drive away for that bit of variety. This town and it's friendly people, this apartment, and the Watson's, presented the perfect package for our needs and beyond. Thank you so much for introducing us to the wonderful Alhaurin it has been life changing for the good.
