Home description

Built to the highest specifications, this spacious, fully appointed and beautifully furnished apartment is located within the exclusive Sol Andalusi resort and sleeps four in two twin-bedded bedrooms (the master bedroom has en suite facilities). A magnificent terrace, overlooking Alhaurín valley and the foothills of the Guadalhorce Mountains, runs the length of the living room and main bedroom. A single step leads down into a small, sun-drenched private garden. The second bedroom has its own small terrace.

Sol Andalusi are the market leaders in the development and management of the 'healthy living' concept in Spain. The resort is built on a 150,000 sq. m. estate, with landscaped, sub-tropical gardens, gracious walkways and lake. Among the amenities at the resort are: exquisitely designed outdoor swimming pool with sunbathing facilities and chiringuito (snack-bar); heated indoor semi-Olympic size pool; fully equipped techno-gym and fitness centre; one of the most sophisticated health and beauty spas in the Costa del Sol (massage, flotarium, terma, Turkish bath, Vichy bath, seaweed wrapping, solarium, contrast swimming pools, etc.); tennis and padel (paddle tennis) courts; petanque (boules); buffet restaurant (serving Spanish and international cuisine); piano bar serving tapas and bar meals; small supermarket. The resort is gated, with 24-hour security.

The apartment is ideally located to enable visitors to take advantage of the attractions of both the immediate area and wider Andalucia. There are four excellent golf courses within ten minutes' reach; the nearest beach is only twenty minutes drive. The bustling town of Alhaurín de la Torre is five minutes away. Málaga City with its Picasso Museum, famous Cathedral, Moorish fortress, and fantastic shopping and nightlife is twenty minutes; and there is convenient access to Granada (with its Alhambra Palace) and the Sierra Nevada; Nerja, Benalmadena and Marbella on the coast; Cordoba, Ronda and the spectacular, picturesque whitewashed villages (pueblos blancos) of inland Andalucia.

The Costa del Sol/Malaga region

With its gorgeous climate (an average of 300 days' sunshine per year), dramatic and varied scenery, tempestuous history and current cultural vitality, Andalusia is a treasure trove for any tourist, capable of accommodating every taste and interest.

The often spectacular coastline stretches from the pretty resort of Nerja and the unspoiled Rincón de la Victoria, known for its long sandy beach and spit-roasted sardines, in the east, all the way to Gibraltar and Tarifa in the west, incorporating Málaga itself, the popular beaches of Torremolinos and Benalmadena, the sophistication of Marbella, the dazzle, swagger and opulence of Puerto Banus and Sotogrande. Beyond lies the beautiful Costa de la Luz, the ancient city of Cádiz and the sherry producing Jerez, where you can visit such bodegas as González Byass and Pedro Domecq and sample the wares.

Málaga City is not to be missed. Most of Malaga´s attractions are in or around the historic centre, where you can combine sightseeing with shopping and dining. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city boasts two museums featuring works by its most famous son (and many other works besides), in addition to several other museums and art galleries. The cathedral -- popularly known as La Manquita ('the one-armed one'), because its second tower was never completed) -- is a marvel, and well worth a visit; it abuts the vast Alcazaba, built between the 8th-11th centuries, and the ruins of the Castillo de Gibralfaro, a fascinating 14th century Moorish castle, much loved by children.

Beyond the bullring with its museum, there is an English cemetery with graves of notables such as the author Gerald Brenan. The botanical gardens on the outskirts of the city should not be missed. Málaga's chic shopping precinct is part pedestrianised, and its vibrant, mazy passages, and alleys make for wonderful sauntering and shopping. Tapas bars, cafés and restaurants spill out onto the streets. During fiestas, especially, for example at Easter, Christmas and the mid-August summer fiesta, Málaga is a riot of music, colour and excitement, as the entire city seems to take to the streets in costume. Flamenco is everywhere. Malagueños definitely know how to enjoy themselves.

The Costa del Sol is a golfer's paradise, with almost a hundred top class courses in easy reach. (Four exceptional courses lie within minutes of the Sol Andalusi resort. See details below) The weather also makes it possible to play tennis year round, and there are abundant opportunities for walking, cycling, climbing, horse-riding and, of course, water-sports of all kinds. Málaga City FC are currently in the Primera Liga: La Rosaleda (the stadium in Málaga) is easily accessible: visitors missing football can buy a ticket for a fraction of the cost of a UK Premier League match and watch Málaga take on Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia or Sevilla.

Málaga is known as the Gateway to the Interior. Inland Andalucia is breathtaking: Granada, Córdoba and Seville showcase the region's extraordinary classical, Moorish and Renaissance heritage in the form of such wonders as Granada's Alhambra palace and gardens (considered by some to be one of the 10 wonders of the world, Cordoba's Mezquita (mosque/cathedral) and Seville's marvellous cathedral, La Giralda. All three cities are within two to three hours' drive of Sol Andalusi and make for wonderful outings or weekend visits. The area bears witness to Iberian, Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Visigothic, Jewish, Berber, and Arabic civilisations and features numerous significant archaeological sites.

Many historic towns lie within easy reach of Sol Andalusi, including several of the 'pueblos blancos', whitewashed towns and villages, often perched improbably on the tops of hills or hanging precipitously over the sides of cliffs. With their steep, narrow streets and glistening white buildings, these towns are remarkably picturesque, and also offer superb, panoramic views onto the surrounding countryside. Ronda, with its stunning medieval bridge over the steep Tajo gorge and its atmospheric bull-ring, Frigiliana, Gaucín and Antequera are among the most beautiful and popular 'pueblos blancos'. Frigiliana has been voted the prettiest village in Andalucia by the Spanish tourist board.

The landscape around Málaga and the Guadalhorce valley is exceptionally diverse and beautiful, featuring lagoons, forests, gorges, the mountains of the Sierra de las Nieves, valleys, and parks. Within easy reach of Sol Andalusi are several superb sight-seeing attractions: Garganta del Chorro, an immense chasm cut into the surrounding limestone mountain by the force of the river; El Torcal, a mountainous park in which, over centuries, the exposed limestone has been weathered into strangely shaped formations, some looking almost human, as though the area had been occupied thousands of years ago by aliens from outer space; the Parque Natural de los Montes de Málaga, a beautiful reserve, stocked with wildlife; and the embalses (or lakes) around Ardales, popularly dubbed the 'lake district' of southern Spain.

Gibraltar is easily accessible from Sol Andalusi, for a day trip. (Don´t forget your passport!) Gib. offers many attractions: leave time for an orientation Rock tour, cable car ride, Dolphin World, and shopping. A ferry from Algeciras will take you to the autonomous Spanish city of Ceuta (with its famous Mediterranean Maritime Park), on the tip of the African continent. You can travel to Tangiers (in Morocco), with its unique fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, from Benalmádena or Tarifa. (Again, don´t forget your passport.)

Alhaurin de la Torre Area / Sol Andalusi Resort area

Alhaurin de la Torre, some 4 kms from the resort, sits at the entrance to the Guadalhorce Valley and has a privileged climate due to its location. In recent years it has grown rapidly from a village into a small town while retaining its friendly, village-like atmosphere, so offers all the conveniences of a city without the hassle. There are several supermarkets, numerous small shops of every kind, a permanent indoor market and a weekly outdoor market (Wednesdays), as well as many restaurants, bars and taperias. The traditional and the modern live side by side in the town. In the 'Barrio Viejo´(Old Quarter) are old Moorish style streets with whitewashed houses decorated on the outside with a variety of ceramic tiles. Beyond are modern houses and villas. The town has beautiful gardens and nature areas, including a municipal park and a grand Andalucian country house,´El Porton´, dating from the 19th century, set in beautiful gardens and containing an outdoor Roman-style auditorium which hosts cultural events such as the jazz festival in August.

Alhaurín de la Torre also hosts an annual flamenco festival and the five-day festival of San Juan. On Holy Thursday and Good Friday every year, there are colourful pageants and musical processions, with each of the two major religious brotherhoods (known locally as ´the purple ones´and ´the green ones´) competing to outshine the other. The two brotherhoods join forces on Easter Sunday for a spectacular procession.

Sol Andalusi makes a wonderful base for family activities. Within easy reach are the conservation Zoo in Fuengirola, SeaLife Aquarium, Crocodile Park, Dolphin Park and Tivoli World (show and amusement park), all in Benalmádena, Senda El Retiro bird and plant park in Churriana, donkey rides in Mijas (with its unsurpassed views of the coast), the Nerja Caves, a Wolf Park in Antequera and Wolf Sanctuary on the outskirts of Marbella, the vast colony of breeding flamingoes in spring in Fuente Piedra Lagoon, aquatic parks in Mijas, Torremolinos and Fuengirola, and more.

There are dozens of golf courses in the Costa del Sol area. The four closest to the resort are:

*Lauro Golf: designed by Italian golf architect Folco Nardi. Walkable par 72 with 27 holes. Clubhouse is 200 year old Andalusian finca. Has hosted a number of major amateur tournaments since opening in 1992. Challenging, due to its nine lakes. Relatively flat, parkland surrounded by trees, olive groves, wonderful views over valley to Málaga Bay. Typical Spanish patio restaurant, very pleasant in summer.

*Alhaurin Golf Club: designed by Severiano Ballesteros, 18 hole 72 par, international quality; also 18 hole junior course. Situated on a lake just outside Alhaurin El Grande, with spectacular views onto mountains to the North, the Mediterranean and Coast of Africa to the South. Driving range, riding, tennis.

*Guadalhorce Golf Club. Designed by Kosti Kuronen. 18 holes, par 72. Clubhouse is 18th century mansion, beautifully restored. Friendly, family oriented course. Pools, tennis, saunas. Lakes, tropical vegetation, raised greens. Parkland and hilly fairways.

*Parador del Golf. Designed by Tom Simpson (who also designed Muirfield). 18 holes, par 72. This links course was the first to be built on the Costa (1925). Set in Eucalyptus, pine, olive and palm groves, oleander hibiscus. Has hosted several PGA tournaments. Quite challenging.

´My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in your apartment. It was clean, bright and airy; the views were relaxing and the location is calm and quiet while being close enough to be in town, Alhaurin de la Torre, in 5 or 6 minutes, and the coast is within 20 minutes´ (Jim, August 2008).
'We have had a lovely time in Sol Andalusi. The apartment had everything we needed. The resort hotel and facilities were excellent and we would definitely recommend it to others. The housekeeper is lovely." (Stephanie, August 2009)
