The Costa del Sol region

With one of Europe's best year-round climates, the Costa del Sol is situated in the Adalusian region of southern Spain and is renowned for its cosmopolitan flavour and lifestyle and its dramatic scenery. The region is both energetic and colourful with all the facilities you could want close at hand: shops; bars; long, sandy beaches; yachting harbours and marinas; restaurants; nightlife; and over eighty superb golf courses.
Within fifteen minutes drive of Sol Andalusi, Malaga, birthplace of Picasso, combines modern shopping facilities and the famous El Corte Ingles with narrow side streets and a maze of alleys as well as the old quarter crammed with tapas bars and bodegas - old-fashioned wine shops brimming with casks of the local sweet wine just waiting to be sampled.
Most tourists bypass Malaga, heading straight from the airport direct to their resort accommodation missing a Spanish gem. Malaga is beautiful - full of culture, great architecture, fabulous shopping and great for mooching around, taking it easy, eating well and people watching - day or night.
The Guadalhorce region includes some of southern Spain's wildest scenery set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountains with fertile plains which house orchards, olive groves, and beautiful Andalusian white 'sugar cube' villages. There's so much to see and do here that you simply won't have time to get bored!
- On your doorstep: typical Spanish bars, restaurants and tapas
- Within five to fifteen minutes: four well-known golf courses - Alhaurin Golf (designed by Seve Ballesteros), Lauro Golf, Guadalahorce Golf; Parador Golf (PGA tournaments)
- Fifteen minutes: Malaga Airport and Costa del Sol beaches
- Fifteen to twenty minutes: Malaga city centre
- Twenty minutes: Benalmadena and the yachting harbour
- Forty-five minutes west: Marbella and Puerto Banus
- Forty five minutes east: Lake Vinuela and the famous Axarquia white villages
- Ninety minutes: Granada and the Sierra Nevada (ski-ing)
The Alhaurin de la Torre Area / Sol Andalusi area
The area immediately surrounding Sol Andalusi is a great place to discover southern Spain. Situated in the beautiful Guadalhorce mountain valley, near the charming towns of Alhaurin de la Torre to the southwest and Alhaurin el Grande to the north. Just a short drive away, you can enjoy a vast range of attractions including Selwo Marina & Dolphin Park, Tivoli World and Sea Life, all in the Benalmadena area; Lobo Wolf Park in Antequerra as well as the Treasure Caves at Rincon de la Victoria. Sol Andalusi reception staff are always available to help with directions and daily car rental if required.
For those interested in playing golf, there are four of Europe's finest championship golf courses within five to fifteen minutes of the resort:
- Alhaurin Golf Club
Alhaurin has an 18 hole par 72 course designed by Seve Ballesteros, a 9 hole course bordering a beautiful
lake, and an 18 hole junior course. Situated on the outskirts of Alhaurin el Grande, there are majestic views
of mountains to the north and Africa and the Mediterranean to the south. Facilities include a driving range as
well as horse riding and tennis. The management has made significant investments over recent years to
make the original 1993 Ballesteros-designed course friendlier to all standards of golfer. The resort also has
a terrific children's course adjacent to the new clubhouse. The main golf course is of international quality with
many challenging holes set among natural terrain, which includes pine woods and many hazards.
- Lauro Golf
The Los Caracolillos course is the latest designed by the Italian golf architect Folco Nardi. The clubhouse is
a 200 year-old Andalusian farmouse and, since opening in 1992, the course has hosted several major
amateur tournaments. Located 1,000 feet above sea level and set in beautiful countryside, Lauro is an
interesting course with nine lakes and lots of olive trees. Inland from Malaga and Alhaurin de la Torre, Lauro
golf course is a relatively flat parkland-style course with great views over the valley and Malaga Bay. Lauro
has opened a spectacular third loop of nine holes which bring variety, height and depth to the complex with all
the holes named after famous bullfighters.
- Guadalhorce Golf Club
Situated on the eastern side of Malaga airport, Guadalhorce is well worth visiting with a clubhouse that is a
beautifully restored 18th Century Andalusian major. It is a friendly, family-orientated club with additional
facilities such as pools, tennis courts and saunas. The first nine holes are quite hilly and fairly open with a
distinctively English 'parkland' feel about them with slightly rolling terrain and tricky greens. The back nine,
however, are flatter with more an American style with lakes, tropical vegetation and raised greens. Many
of these greens are extremely large and, in some cases, are shared between two holes - for example the 6th
& 8th and the 12th & 16th.
- Real Club de Campo Malaga (Parador)
Designed by Tom Simpson - who also designed Turnberry and Muirfield - this is
one of the oldest clubs on the Costa del Sol having been originally built in 1925. Just 1km from Malaga
airport, this flat links course has some holes directly on the seaside whilst others are set in avenues of
eucalyptus trees. Wide fairways are also lined with mature pine, olive and palm trees and colour is added
with many oleander and hibiscus bushes. Host to several PGA tournaments, the course is also quite a
challenge with some long par 3 and 4s.
Local Towns
Alhaurin de la Torre - A town typical of Malaga province, it sits at the entrance to the Guadalhorce valley on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, 12 km from Malaga City and just 5 mins from Sol Andalusi. The traditional and modern live comfortably side by side in this town with its old Moorish-style streets and houses in the Barrio Viejo (old quarter) and the modern stylish villas on the outskirts.
Alhaurin el Grande - Just minutes inland from Sol Andalusi, Alhaurin el Grande is one of the most picturesque villages in the Guadalhorce valley. The coast is close by, with Fuengirola and Mijas just a few miles along a winding road round the mountain, while a new road has been built through Marbella to the southwest. Rolling hills and wide open spaces give a feeling of space all around the town.
