Home description
This large house has been carefully renovated, respecting its original architecture and traditional features. It has attractive beamed ceilings, thick walls and Moorish archways. The furniture is a blend of restored Spanish, old-fashioned English and rustic South African! There is a private patio for dining al fresco, and the spacious split level roof terrace enjoys views of the surrounding hillsides and the town's imposing fifteenth century church, La Encarnación. The house is situated in a delightfully quiet street in the oldest part of historic Alhama, yet the main square, with its shops, bars and restaurants, is a gentle stroll away. The owners live in Alhama and are therefore readily available both to meet and greet and to help with anything you need during your holiday. A virtual tour of the property can be found on the owners' website.

The Costa Tropical/Granada region
Granada province of Andalucia is the place where you can ski in the morning and lie on the beach in the afternoon. Scenery ranges from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the Mediterranean coast, with everything you can think of in between. The city of Granada is one of the three classic cities of Andalucia (the others being Cordoba and Sevilla) and was the final stronghold of the Moors, falling to the Christian forces in 1492. It's home to the world famous Alhambra (which came 8th in the 2007 competiton to name the new seven wonders of the world!) and has a wonderfully preserved old town -Albaycin - as well as the more modern Christian sections.
Alhama de Granada area
Alhama de Granada is in the mountains about 60k from Granada and it's where the Moorish rulers of Granada used to come to enjoy the waters of its hot springs. It's built along the edge of a gorge and is a pretty, traditional town. The old quarter, the barrio árabe, dates from Moorish times. A newer section was built following a severe earthquake in 1884. The Rough Guide to Andalucía describes it as "one of the unsung gems of Granada province". About 6,000 people live in Alhama and it is self-sufficient in terms of shops, bars, restaurants and other services.
The town of Alhama itself, the gorge alongside the town, and the local landscape, alternating between gently rolling hills and dramatic crags, offer limitless opportunities for outdoor leisure. There are walks in and around Alhama itself, and the hot springs that give the town its name warrant a place on anyone’s itinerary, especially during the winter months. Lake Bermajales, about ten kilometres away, offers beach swimming in clear fresh water. Alternatively, the beaches of the Costa del Sol are about an hour’s drive away.
Serious climbers will find enough on Sierra de Loja, 30 minutes’ drive away, to keep them occupied. The quiet roads and numerous tracks that criss-cross this tranquil area are ideal for cyclists, with local bike hire available. We can also arrange photography tuition and horseriding lessons.
