The Andalucia region
Under an hours drive is The Alhambra. The origin of this fantastic Nasrid palace, one of the greatest pieces of Arab art in the world, dates back to a simple fortress built in the ninth century and called 'Alhambra', meaning 'The Red', the colour of the material used in its making. Work for transforming the fortress into a palace was undertaken by Muhammad I, who moved his residence from Albaicin to the neighbouring hill in 1237. Work for transforming the fortress into a palace was undertaken by Muhammad I, who moved his residence from Albaicin to the neighbouring hill in 1237.
The fabulous city of Granada is just 40 minutes from Casa Las Aguilas, here you can wander the streets taking in the atmosphere of this ancient city. Shops range from bustling Arab markets selling Moroccan wares to chic boutiques offering designer fashions. The many restaurants and bars offer a fantastic array of dishes and local delicacies, there are patisseries full of sweet offerings, ice cream shops with every flavour you can think off, from plain vanilla to exotic tastes like chilli chocolate and water melon all beautifully displayed. If shopping is not for you what about visiting the historic cathedral or the brilliant Science Museum with lots to keep both kids and adults interested.
The waters of Lake Bermejales are just a short drive away and here you can enjoy water sports, swimming and fishing as well as walking the picturesque shoreline or just plain relaxing in the sunshine. There are picnic tables set amongst the pine trees available for you to use. The lake is a favourite place for the locals to spend a Sunday afternoon, enjoying the water and having long lazy barbecues.
Alhama De Granada
The town of Alhama de Granada's name has its origins in the famous baths and thermal waters, well known back in Roman times. The town is just 58 kilometres from the city of Granada. It is set in beautiful mountainous surroundings, with charming white houses, impressive as they cling to the side of a steep gorge.
The town's interesting historic monuments are the legacy of the different cultures that have passed through Andalusia over the ages. Attracted by its waters, they settled in the town of Alhama. Many historic marks have been left in Alhama de Granada: from the Roman bridge (1st century BC) that leads to the thermal springs, to the intricate layout of the Moorish quarter, where you can still see the Torresolana watchtower and the Granary, an old synagogue dating from the 13th century. Its historic centre has been declared of Cultural Interest.
The town has a wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants, local markets, bakers, butchers and fish mongers cater for all your needs and the weekly market on Friday sells everything from fresh fruit and veg, clothing, shoes and even fresh spit roasted chickens, all at very reasonable prices - the locals call the market "El Barato" which means cheap!
The hotel Balneario just outside the town at the hot springs offers a range of spa treatments and has a pool filled with the hot spring waters which are reputed to have therapeutic properties, but why not do as the locals do and sit in the original pools filled with waters that flow into the river from the springs.

The house is handsome, spotless and well appointed but it was the private rooftop terrace that really did it for me. Seems to get the sun all day and is perfect for barbecuing boquerones from the fishmonger a few doors up.
It's also no distance from the beautiful old town, the friendly bars and restaurants, and the starting points for walks to the dramatic gorge and hot springs.
Jeff was easy to deal with, friendly and welcoming.
A highly recommended town, house and owner.

"Relaxing "La Siesta""
The house is in a great place, just off the main plaza handy for the shops & bars and close to the old Arab quarter and Gorge. It is well laid out with all the modern needs, wi-fi, TV, washing machine etc. The owner, Jeff, was there to meet us and was helpful and available throughout our stay.
Alhama De Granada is a place full of interest with much to see and explore. Walks through the gorge and the narrow streets of the old Arab quarter are a must. There are plenty of places to visit within easy driving distance, Granada and the Alhambra, the Embalse de los Bermejales etc.
We really enjoyed our stay and will return in the not too distant future.
