About this location

The Algarve region

The Algarve region is blessed with a wonderful climate, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports in summer, and mild enough in spring, autumn and winter for tennis, golf, clifftop or countrywide walking, exploring and sightseeing.

The legacy of a 500 year occupation by the Moors can be seen in the architecture and historic towns of the region, such as Silves (6 km from villa), with its towering castle walls, ancient cathedral, and museum. Winding streets lead down to the Roman bridge on the River Arade, from where boat trips can be taken to Portimao. For the modern visitor there are the necessary banks, restaurants, a covered food market, supermarket and shops.

Places of interest include Caldas de Monchique, a spa village dating back to Roman times. Recently restored, it has a lovely restaurant, and is en route for Foia, the highest point of the Algarve, from where there are spectacular views right down to the coast, through the Monchique hills with their fragrant Eucalyptus trees.

On the coastline Portimao, an old fishing port, now a bustling town can be seen, with its modern road bridge.

The historic old port of Lagos, with nearby beautiful caves at Praia Dona Ana (accessible by fisherman's boat from the beach) and towering sandstone cliffs is well worth a visit. The beaches with golden sand and towering cliffs are quite breathtaking. The local fishermen take visitors for a tour of the caves, and often visitors swim from the boats within the acquamarine water of the caves.

Faro old town (45 kms), and Tavira with its camera obscura , and nearby bird nature reserve are also of great interest.

For train lovers, an excellent service runs from Tunes Station (just beyond Algoz village), main line to Lisbon, over the River Tagus right into the city itself (a three hour journey), with some trains continuing on as far north as Oporto. Trains are comfortable, reasonable in price and a joy to use. Concessionary prices are available for young people and over 60's on production of passport.

An hour's drive past Faro takes you across the border between Portugal and Spain, and Seville is now a 3 hour drive away. (Check your car insurance first with your hire company).

Armacao de Pera is the nearest coastal resort which is 15 minutes drive with its beautful beaches and golden cliffs, and there is a wide range of large and small beaches to expore along the coast which are ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Boat trips to explore the caves and grottos are available for hire, as are water and jet skis.

Banks and a supermarket may be found in Silves. This beautiful old city, with its old Cathedral and castle walls is a joy to visit.

The “Algarve Shopping” precinct near Guia offers a large supermarket, a multiplex cinema, bowling alley and food court, as well as numerous smart clothing shops.. There are many local restaurants in nearby villages and towns, and near the beach at Armacao de Pera, serving local cusine, fresh fish and seafood. There is also a selection of high quality restaurants serving Mediterranean & international food within 15 mins drive.

Local food markets in Silves and Armacao de Pera sell beautifully fresh fish, meat and vegetables, ideal for cooking at home in the kitchen and on the barbecue.

Other leisure activities include Zoomarine with its Dolphin and sea lion and bird of prey shows. A water slide park "Aqualand" near Porches is within 10 mins drive, and the sand sculpture exhibition is 10 mins away.

Golf at Silves 10 mins, Salgados 15 mins, Vilamoura (3 courses) & Penina about 30 minutes drive away, and situated 2 minutes from the luxury Amendoeira a golf resort with two championship courses design by Nick Faldo & Christie O'Connor opening in 2008.

Numerous countryside and clifftop walks (walking guide books and maps in sitting room). Without taking the car, you can walk out from the villa through the orange groves in the direction of Silves along the old country lanes.

Monchique mountains, old town Faro, Portimao, old port of Lagos, Sagres, Tavira are all interesting places within driving distance.

Horse riding is available at Quinta de Saudade, on the lower Albufeira road, about a ten minute drive away.

Local markets in Algoz, Armacao de Pera, Albufeira and many other small towns operate monthly (see list in villa for dates).

"A quiet,private, comfortable villa."

Having stayed in this Villa many times before it is truly great experience which lives up to its description. The addition of Solar Heating for the swimming pool really extends the season.

"A beautiful villa in a quiet location just a short drive from lovely beaches"

"Excellent family holiday villa"

We stayed at Casa Alegre in July for the second year running. It's the first time we have ever gone back to the same place like that.

It is an excellent, family-friendly villa in a great location.

We particularly like:
- outdoor pool (with new solar heating)
- very handy location, only a short drive to waterparks and beaches, supermarket, restaurants etc.
- kids toys and puzzles
- wifi
- very clean and comfortable
- very easy to book, get keys etc. Jane has been very helpful and flexible with us when our flights were cancelled.

You do need a car, and we recommend sat nav too to help find beaches etc.

Highly recommended.

"Lovely holiday villa"

We were a group of 6 people, staying in Casa Alegre for 1 week in June. The booking process was seamless, Jane was amazing at giving detailed directions and recommendations.
The villa is well equipped and very clean, it has everything you need for a dream holiday. The panorama is beautiful, the garden is well taken after and the pool is great.
We have enjoyed lying in the sun and swimming in the pool, as well as hanging out on the terrace at night, looking at the moon and stars.

We definitely recommend this place for a nice, relaxing vacation.

"Home from home"

Myself, my partner and two children (boys aged 9 and 13) spent two lovely weeks in Casa-alegre. This was our first holiday in a villa, as previously we've been to All Inclusive hotels, and it will certainly now be one of many.
The villa was very spacious and had absolutely everything in it. The kitchen crockery, utensils etc put mine to shame at home. British TV and free wifi was a definite plus. I read a couple of books from the extensive library while the boys enjoyed playing Ludo and doing some of the jigsaws.
We loved the peaceful setting and the endless, undisturbed view from the terrace. Yet, there was so much to do and see within a short drive. The marina of Vilamoura was lovely with amazing seafood and the beach at Gale was breathtaking.
A superb pool too with plenty of loungers. The best time of the day there was between 5pm and 7.
And last but by no means least...lovely Maria. She came in 6 days a week to tidy/clean the villa which meant it was a real holiday for me.
I thoroughly recommend Casa-Alegre and hope to be back very soon.

"Home from home."

Very peaceful location with great views all round. Comfortable accommodation, the house has everything one would need together with a well maintained secluded swimming pool.

A good supermarket (Continentale) in Silves which has everything.

"A lovely and relaxing family villa"

Located just off the N269 between Algoz and Silves, about 40 minutes drive from Faro Airport, Casa Alegre is a splendid villa on a hilltop with great views south over orange groves and the Algarve countryside. Although the intention some time ago appears to have been to build a complex of villas, very few of the plots have been built on, giving Casa Alegre a secluded feel.

The villa is well looked after, both inside and out, and the grounds are very well kept. Everything we needed during our stay had been supplied and we could not think of any improvements that we could have suggested. Whilst there, we catered for ourselves on all but two nights and found the kitchen to be better equipped than our own at home. We put the barbecue area just outside the kitchen to good use, too.

Silves and Algoz are both a 10 minute drive from the villa should you need any supplies - Silves has a supermarket and both have markets for fresh produce.

Any type of beach that the Algarve has to offer is within 20 minutes drive of the villa, as are a water park, a sandcastle exhibition, a marine zoo and the historic attractions of Silves. If you're a bird-watcher, either sit on the veranda and wait or head down to the marshes by the sea.

We had a fantastic, relaxing holiday and would definitely and strongly recommend this villa.

"Casa Alegre exceeded our expectations in so many ways!"

We are a family of 5 (includes 3 teenagers) and have just had a brilliant holiday at Casa Alegre. The photos on the internet do not do the villa and pool justice. The villa itself is very comfortable, clean, spacious and very well equpped right down to cool box and ice blocks. The pool was very clean and larger than it looks on the photos and much time was spent either in it or on the sun loungers surrounding it. Three large parasols were used for the sun in the afternoons. The villa is quite high up and you do need to have a car but the villa is within easy reach of beaches and towns, etc. We found the owner's guide extremely useful highlighting as it does the best beaches, restaurants, markets. It was safe, secure and private and the lovely garden, pool and house were very well maintained and extremely discreetly as well. This is a property I would highly recommend to friends. Also had WiFi which was great! Also, British channels on TV!

"Child friendly break in peaceful surroundings"

Booking with the owner was seamless, confirmation and receipts received. Even after a last minute family crisis, she happily offered alternative dates, which thankfully were not needed in the end. On arrival we were able to let our 2 yr old explore, safe in the knowledge that she couldn't get far because of the gated terrace and pool. High chair, change mats, cot, plates and cutlery were all provided, which meant we didn't have to pack too much. There were also a lot of toys and books that she could look at as well as CBeebies to keep her entertained.
The kitchen was well stocked, which enabled us to self cater when we wanted - but the villa also had a list of local, recommended restaurants and off-the beaten track beaches, which we made the most of.
A car is definitely needed to get out and about as well as buy food. We were there in May and the weather was a little changeable. The pool is not heated which meant we were unable to use it - a shame, but I can't imagine this would be an issue in the height of summer.
All in all, a relaxing break for us all.
