The Ontario region
Ontario has a population of about 13 mio; but, with an area of about 1.1 mio sq km (425,000 sq miles) (an area greater than Spain and France combined) there are many areas of wilderness - forests and lakes that seem to go on forever. Speaking of lakes, Ontario has over 250,000 of them and has over 1/3 of the world's fresh water.
When you visit Ontario, if at all possible, visit world famous Niagara Falls - more than 168,000 cubic m (6 million cubic ft) of water goes over the falls in a minute.
The 2 main urban tourist destinations are cosmopolitan Toronto and Canada's capital, Ottawa. We recommend that while in Toronto you don't miss the CN Tower and in Ottawa that you take in the musical ride of the Mounties - if there in the winter check out the world's longest skating rink on the Ottawa River.
Of course many tourists visit Ontario to experience the wilderness. In the summer, a must do is a visit to a lake in cottage country (where we are) and in winter don't miss having a dog sled ride.
Naturally, in such a large province (extends as far south as Rome, Italy and as far north as London, England or Warsaw, Poland) there are many other things to do and see; but, space here is limited.
The Algonquin Park area
The cottage is located in the Algonquin Highlands of Southern Ontario - about 3.5 hrs from Toronto and 2 hours from Toronto. In fact, many of our overseas visitors come to this wilderness area (only about 3 inhabitants per sq km) as a break between visiting the major urban centres of Toronto and Ottawa.
A main attraction in this area is world famous Algonquin Park - over 7,000 sq km. Don't miss the Visitors' Centre or the Logging Museum - and if you are around in August, participate in one of their wolf howls.
This area is a 4 seasons cottage country playground. There is so much to soto do at the cottage and in the area - swim, fish (also ice fishing), canoe, kayak, use pedal or row boats, snowshoe, play tennis or badmintom, horseback riding, ATVing, dog sledding, snowmobiling - the list just goes on and on.

Spent three nights at the Blue Moon Resort in May with family to celebrate an occasion. Beautiful spot and very private. The cottage was spotless and well equipped with all necessary kitchen items, large screen tv, games and on-site laundry (a must for those who frequent the hot tub). Beds were comfortable, bathrooms were very nice, livingroom was large with comfy furniture so we could all enjoy a movie together in the evening. We will definitely return!! |
