Sardinia Region is one of the last paradise loose over the world, with a population of only 1.000.000 people divided into 8 main cities, the Island can offer really different kind of landscapes and traditional cultures.
Starting from amazing sea and undersea landscapes with Caribbean beach, trough charming highlands perfect set for trekking lovers, to really high mountain landscape where you can find still live pastoral traditions of the ancient Sardinians populations.
Depositary of a really vivid cultural landscape over the periods, the island was conquered by the main ancient cultures as the Punic and Roman one, but as well Spanish/Catalan and Arabic in the south of the area. This is the land of many important characters of the national and International cultural set, as G. Deledda and S. Satta as writers , but as well Gramsci as politician and C. About periods, Festivals and celebrations that you cannot loose, look for The Redentore ceremony where you can enjoy the amazing different presence of several traditional uniforms “Costumi Sardi” of the different places from all the Island, in Nuoro city at end of August; the Candelieri ceremony in Sassari (north west) during 3rd week of May, The “Cavalcata Sarda” in Oristano city (central west Island area down Alghero city) and “S. Efisio” celebrations in Cagliari (south island)…… between the many others festivals and celebrations over all the year and along the really different traditional cultures and landscapes realities that the Island offer for a really unique and unforgettable holiday experience!
The Alghero / Lazzaretto area
Alghero little city (around 44.000 people) is a wonderful rare example of integration between still living of ancient Spanish/Catalan traditions with typical Sardinians ones. Is situated on the Norwest coast of Sardinia Island in a really happy green agricultural area called “Nurra”, crowded of really ancient Sardinian typical constructions called “Nuraghes”.
This part of Sardinian coast was conquered in XIV century by Catalans that built the ancient urban typology still really good conserved with the ancient walls, the main doors to sea ”Porta a Mare” that connected the dock area with the ancient historical centre, the “Porta a Terra” or “Bastione La Maddalena” that was in the past the ancient door and connections with the ancient Sardinians populations and territory and today remains as exposition centre of city history and traditions. The little city contain still today great examples of gothic churches as “S. Michele” with is amazing all coloured couple and the Cathedral with its particularity of two completely different entrance, the Gothic one and the post restoration big white neoclassical.
The historic city is really good conserved and crowded of wonderful and characteristic little squares, corner and Belvedere where you can enjoy delicious seafood base meals products of the integration between the two original Sardinians and Catalan cultures.
You cannot miss the “Bastioni” area where during all day you can enjoy the little characteristic restaurants and bar eating delicious food and wines with the wonderful view of sea line and “Capocaccia” skyline.
The Alghero city can be enjoyed as a unique long walkway starting from northern Lido S.Giovanni beach, trough the “Busquets” water front with the high vivid and coloured character of the people walking and jogging and bicycling and skating, trough the ancient “Bastioni” walkway with its ancient silent charming atmosphere, till the “Lungo mare Dante” south walkway characterized of its wonderful naturalistic area panorama and as well its historic Liberty stile Villas built during the beginning of XIX century.
About periods, Festivals and celebrations you cannot loose:
_ April: Easter /Holy Week celebrations called here the “Settimana Santa” the most suggestive ones in Sardinia!
_ From January to March: “Sagra del Bogamarì “the sea-arching tasting festival.
_ April to May: “the pilgrimage to the Valverde church”, a traditional little countryside church just few kilometres from Alghero city .
_ 15th August: The “Ferragosto” celebration with its spectacular fireworks.
_ September : San Michele celebrations ( the town Saint Patron) about spectacular traditional performance on the streets and huge final fireworks
_ Christmas and New Year celebrations (here called “Cap d’Annì”) are becoming really great event in the Sardinians Island and attractions for a quite crescent number of people over the world, thanks to the characteristic mix between Sardinian and Catalan catholic traditions and a full entertainments component culminant with the final fireworks welcoming to the New Year.
About attractions you cannot miss:
_ The “Nettuno Grotto”, you can arrive trough boat every day starting from public dock with different many daily routes or by bus (there are different daily rides, every hour over the day) or driving from Alghero to “Capocaccia” direction and enjoy the 100 stairs trough the really charming highland typical landscape till the Grotto!
_ Bosa “Little Venice” city with its ancient medieval castle and the shipping Temo river;
_ “Porto Conte” gulf and “Foradada” little island, the “Bombarde” and “Lazzaretto” beaches, the “Palmavera nuraghe” just few kilometres Northway out of the city and at the end you cannot miss “Stintino” beach in front of the “Asinara Island Natural Park”, a paradisical landscape and sea only 40 minutes driving from Alghero ( there are buses service with many daily rides , morning, afternoon and evenings hours!!)
Main tourist activities offers: Snorkelling, Scuba diving, windsurfing, sea immersions, sailing, lunch on board daily boat trips, cycling and skating rental facility, mountain trekking tours, cultural tours (historic/traditional countryside village ), wine and traditional food tasting tours.

You can easily arrive to “Alghero Fertilia” airport, only few kilometres from the city, by low cost flights from many world areas (Companies are: “Air One” , “Alpi Eagles Airlines” and “Ryanair”, etc..) all of them for national and international fly routes : London, Dublin, Liverpool, Bream, Stockholm, Dusseldorf and Barcelona, Venice, Rome Pisa and many others as Prague and Kiev!
Outside the Airport is an efficient shuttle service to go/return from Alghero city, with many useful and comfortable stops on the way. There is also a taxi service available 24hrs per day ( maximum cost is 25 Euros), for the connections with Alghero and its marvellous surroundings, like “Capo Caccia”, “Portoconte”, “Stintino”, all of them are stunning holiday trips!
Leaving from Genova, it is possible to arrive to Portotorres (distant no more than 30 minutes from Alghero) by Ferry with the “Grandi Navi Veloci”; alternatives by Ferry are: from Livorno, Piombino, Genova and Civitavecchia, most of them connected to the Sardinian port of Olbia, id est about 2 hours driving to Aghero.
Otherwise one can travel by train from Olbia to Alghero train station (only 300 meters from home!) in 2 hours and half, though with a train change in Sassari railways station.
