The Sardinia region
Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, just 120 miles west off the Italian mainland. Named "Sandalyon" after its footprint-like shape, you are never too far from the sea in Sardinia, and it has left its mark on the people and the landscape.
Almost 2000 kms of coastline is contoured by rugged cliffs, tiny coves, and picturesque harbours & stunning pristine beaches. Inland, the lush, wild landscape of untouched beauty and sculpted red granite rocks harbours hundreds of archaeological sites which bring the past instantly into life.
Then there is the food .. Ooh the food! - fine wines, delicious & fresh seafood, organic meats, gorgeous cheeses and many local extra virgin olive oils, which result in a very rich and varied cuisine.
Alghero / Storico area
Alghero is a Sardinian city with a clear Catalonian influence. It underwent Spanish colonisation for a lengthy period of time which left its mark on the town’s architecture, traditions, its typical cuisine like the famous “aragosta alla catalana” (Catalonian-style Lobster) and above all on the local language.
Alghero has historical ruins, nature reserves, pristine beaches and quaint villages are close by and if you love spectacular vistas of mountain and sea, you will find them here. If you are feeling energetic, explore the spectacular Neptune’s Grotto in the morning, then stop off at a Nuraghe necropolis on your way to lunch at a nearby artichoke festival; then spend the afternoon swimming in clear emerald waters before heading for an aperitif in the old harbour; then finish off the day by tucking into delicious seafood, or authentic Sardinian suckling pig, or just grab a very yummy pizza.
Unless you prefer a more leisurely pace: shop at the local market, stroll through the Old Town admiring the architecture, then wander off to the beach for a swim before heading home for a home-cooked meal; finally, promenade along the sea wall like a local and grab some home-made Italian organic ice cream the likes of which you will not find elsewhere!
