The Sardinia region
Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is formed by a series of mountainous massifs, hills and narrow highlands. A holiday in Alghero is a wonderful opportunity to witness this fantastic place.
The coasts are jagged and rocky, interspersed with marvellous beaches of very fine sand and countless inlets.
The seaside landscapes, especially on the Costa Smeralda, are among the most beautiful in the world. Numerous small, enchanting islets are scattered in front of the coasts.
The coral in its raw form is branchlike and must be worked into the various shapes necessary to make the beads, rings, earrings and carvings so highly prized by natives and tourists.
Amongst Crystal Grottos and Ancient Watchtowers, Alghero has some of the most impressive beaches in Sardinia - The coastline rises and falls and opens into 10 Glorious beaches: * Mugoni Beaches * Lazzaretto Beach * Baja di Conte Beach * Cala Argentiera - La Frana Beach * Maria Pia Beach * Poglina - La Speranza Beach * Porto Ferro Beach * Porto Palmas Beach * Punta Negra Beach * Torre del Porticciolo Beach * Le Bombarde Beach
Be sure to visit as many as possible and another unmissable experience is the Sunset at Capo Caccio. Capo Caccio is a stunning cape about half hour from Alghero. They have a famous grotto here, Grotto Nettuna. The sunset from the cliffs is beautiful. back to top
One can also rent a simple RIB (Inflatable) in order to explore the wonderful coastline and private beaches. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, there are also numerous yacht chartering companies where you can skipper for the day - great fun where lunch and wine in plenty is provided.
Scooters and Bicycles can be hired on a daily rate; these can be very practical as the roads are flat and the views amazing. Horse riding or lessons are another option and the rates are reasonable.
For the girls, shopping is the best and most varied and not expensive. Wonderful shoe shops, lingerie, handbags, beauty shops … yum!
There are lots of historic places/monuments to visit and of course many churches, cathedrals and museums. Whatever your preference your needs will most certainly be catered for.
Given that Sardinia is an island, you can only imagine the mouth-watering freshness of local seafood; caught & prepared in a traditional way and served through recipes handed down from generation to generation, it's indeed quite special.
Sardinian culture and history is rich and diverse. Their love and passion for food is obvious and plays an important part in daily family life. Given the diversity and location, the food is rather different from that of traditional Italian cooking, each dish with a generous serving of history and all in all, an experience you won't want to miss.

Alghero / Lido area
Alghero was founded around 1102 by the Genoese Doria family, as a fortified port. The Doria ruled it for centuries, apart from a brief period under the rule of Pisa (1283-1284). In 1353 it was captured by the Aragonese under Bernardo de Cabrera, and could later grow thanks to the arrival of Catalan colonists: in the early 16th century Alghero received the status of King's City (ciutat de l'Alguer) and developed economically.
Called the Riviera del Corallo, Alghero is famous for its coral jewellery and carvings. Every year divers risk their lives to extract the coral from the deep coastal waters surrounding Alghero.
Alghero has much to offer. Blue flag safe sea bathing is an excellent benefit, Alghero has also recently had a large Olympic sized indoor swimming pool built. Other water activities include scuba diving - some of the most beautiful in the world.
Wind surfing schools for beginners where equipment can be hired is located opposite apartment Mare Blu. Available at the harbour are numerous marine activities, including day trips to the beautiful and mystical Grotto Di Nettuno.
The local restaurants serve some of the most delicious food you can taste - You may have seen Rick Stein's TV programme where he travelled the island sampling the local cuisine and traditions.
How to get there
The easiest way to get to the apartment is by air to Alghero. Ryanair fly there regularly, and are a good budget airline.
