The Sardinia region

Alghero is a beautiful medieval city on the sea.
There are a lot of beaches to choose for your sunny days, and a lot of restaurants, bars and discos for your evenings and nights; car is not necessary, you can arrive anywhere by foot, bycicle (that you can rent) and buses.
In the country near the city you can find also renowned vineyards to visit, horse-riding centres and prehistorical sites with guided visits.

The Alghero / Storico area
Every summer evening in the harbour you can hear sardinian local singers; there are horse carts carryng tourists in the centre of the city, and boats making sea trips to the "Grotte di Nettuno", beautiful sea caves under the cliff of "Capo Caccia".
Copied from www.blogsardinia.co.uk:
"I know you want me to tell you about Alghero…
Since I was a teenager Alghero was one of the top favourite places to go for my summer holidays, main reasons being its fabulous night life, good camping sites and lots of nice beaches nearby…(Le Bombarde was my favourite one).
But now that I am older and wiser…I like it even more. It is indeed a lovely town that has got so much to offer to people of all ages, either if you are looking for good nightlife or a much quieter and more comfortable holiday break or even a proper cultural holiday.
Alghero, also know as the little Barcelona, because of its past of Catalan colony that has left its mark in the architecture and local dialect, it is a beautiful fisherman town with a pretty historic centre framed by ramparts and defensive towers.
I love to wander through its cobbled narrow streets that suddenly open up to fantastic views into the blue see. In the evening you can relax in one of the many outdoors bars before going to a good restaurant to taste the local specialties such as the “Aragosta alla Catalana” (Catalan style Lobster).
During the day you can take a boat to visit the Nettuno sea grottos or, if you feel really adventurous, you can drive to Capo Caccia and climb 659 steps to reach them…. it is really worth doing (but I prefer the boat option!). What you can visit outside Alghero? Lots of options for you but you will need to hire a car.
Going North: visit the villages and beaches of Stintino (53 KM) and Castelsardo (65 KM).
Going South: do not miss the lovely town of Bosa (45 KM). For the archaeology lovers the of Nuraghe Palmavera (3 KM) and the The Anghelu Ruiu Necropolis (10 KM).
Not many people know it but New year’s Eve in Alghero is fun and normally (double-check) there are lots of outdoor concerts, shows, street artists and fireworks etc..
For the girls: the coast where Alghero is located is called “The Coral Riviera” and in Alghero you can buy fantastic coral jewellery !
Definitely worth visiting then, especially if you think that Alghero’s Airport is connected to Stansted with a daily flight and you can be there in slightly more than 2 hours.
If you go there send us some pictures!!

Cap d'Any a l'Alguer. New Year’s Eve in Alghero
For the past 10 years Alghero has organized the Cap d’Any festivities, one of the most famous and sparkling New Year’s Eves in the island. This event, which opens its doors to visitors at the beginning of December and ends during the magic night of December 31st, includes every year an interesting program of thematic shows animating the little streets and squares of the Catalan historic centre. It is an event that cannot be missed, especially for people wishing to spend a different New Year’s Eve, but also for those wishing to savour life in this beautiful medieval town during the Christmas holidays: concerts, theatre shows, street artists and stalls animating the days and especially the nights.
Core of the celebrations is certainly the great night of the 31st, when, following the rich dinners in the numerous little restaurants, with the typical Catalan lobster, people pour down the city streets among dances, concerts and pyrotechnical shows.
An emotional event, plunging the spectator into a kaleidoscope of lights, colours, among thousands of fantastic characters and dreamy treasures that only a town like Alghero can present.

As the title implies, we have just returned from Sunny Terrace for the second time! It feels even more homely than the first trip and I can only re-iterate that the position of this appartment is perfect for absorbing the unique atmosphere that is Alghero, with the harbour view on one side and Piazza Civica on the other!! We could not wish for more. One morning whilst we were there the whole water system ceased to function, which was a major problem. Once this was reported to Maria, the owner, it was solved within two hours, which is pretty impressive as she lives in Cagliari!! It transpired that the whole of the "Old Town"s water suppy had been turned off, so no fault of "Sunny Terrace" and it happens that they have an emergency supply which kept us going until the mains were restored!! Our thanks to "Mrs Rita" (the Alghero lady who deals with "SunnyTerrace" on a daily basis) who came over very quickly to switch on the emergency supply!!. Overall, another fantastic trip to Alghero and we can't wait to return again. Response: It has been an honour to have met such a courteous guest. Thank you very much |

We arrived at the apartment late evening and met the lady there unfortunately she could not speak english and we had no italian so it was bit difficult to understand what was going on. First the negative points. The appartment is up some 50 stairs and therfore not suitable for people with any associated problems. lso if you like a longer lie in bed in the morning the sqaure is a bit noisy from 7am onwards with various street cleaning and related noise. Also was rather disapponted that as we were there 10 days that the bed linen or towels were not changed at least once. We were in fact left the keys and had no other contact from anyone after that.On the plus side the apartment is large and spacious with a reasonable size terrace. The location in the old town is also good for the bars restaurant etc. Alghero itself is a lovely place with bars and restaurants tucked away in the small narrow streets. We were always coming across somewhere new each time we were out and about.our favourite restaurant was Spaghettiria which is a small restauarant next to the larger Casa Blanca . Really well worth a visit. Would definately go back to Alghero . One thing I think would be useful would be a small fact sheet giving details of the location of super markets etc and also an emergency contact number should you require anything. |

We very much enjoyed our stay in this appartment. Living in an historical italian house with a large sunny terrace with view to the harbour is wonderful. You have the beach which is not far away and... more |
Guestbook for Sunny Terrace
"the apartment is very large and well equipped with everything you need, especially in the Kitchen. The terrace is large and overlooks the water, and we enjoyed many evenings there with a bottle of wine and cooking on the bbq provided. The apartment has just the best location! It is very near the bus stop from the airport, 10 minutes walk to a nice sandy beach, 2 minutes walk to the marina wich comes alive in the evenings with street entertainers. The old town wich is packed with little shops and restaurants is lovely to explore and is just a short walk away too. The apartment overlooks a lovely historical square, where you can sit outside with a coffee and croisant in the morning and quietly people watch. It was the perfect apartment for our family, and we will be back again soon!" (Mrs. Paula Ellen, England, 2008).
"we had a wonderful holiday in Alghero last summer. Sunny Terrace apartment was ideally situated in the old town. It was a perfect size for two couples and was extremely well equipped. Your welcome pack was much appreciated. The terrace overlooking the port was a bonus and it was very restful sitting there surrounded by the bouganvillea and your plants" (Mrs. Mary Herlihy, Ireland, 2009).
"I just wanted to say how much we enjoyed staying in your apartment in Alghero. We found everything that we needed. The apartment is so large and we certainly enjoyed the fantastic views from both back and front of the building. An added bonus to the holiday was seeing the fabulous fireworks at the harbour celebrating St Micheals day, also the auto hill climb held on the outskirts of the town where we saw some fantastic racing cars. I shall definitely recommend Alghero as a holiday destination and also recommend your apartment.
Would you also please thank Rita for keeping the apartment so very clean and tidy for us" (mrs. Shirley G. from Spalding, Lincolnshire, UK, october 2010).
"Emplacement idéal en pleine centre, dans un immeuble ancien avec vue sur mer" (Mr. Gregoire F., Suisse, september 2010).
"Nice apartment, great terrace, very clean" (Mrs. Martine V., Holland, march 2010).
