The Sardinia region
The beaches of Sardinia, running after one another in the almost 2000 kilometres of coast, sometime interrupted by rocky formations and port constructions, frame real paradise-like corners. Dotted along the coastline of Sardinia, the protected marine areas are under the governance of the natural heritage trust, numbering among the European sites of natural beauty.
Sardinian cuisine satisfies even the fussiest of palates due to the richness of the territory which in every season gives us products of both delicate and intense tastes, thanks also to the shepherds and farmers who patiently wait to reap what they have sowed and thanks to the climate which ripens our grapes and finally thanks to the excellent Sardinian chefs.
Sardinia's popular art includes woven fabrics, ceramics, carvings and the weaving of baskets. Among the woven works, tapestries, covers, and area rugs also include ancient techniques in their beautiful drawings. White sand beaches, the sea with the colours of the Caribbean one, the history, the cuisine, the traditions and many other things.
Alghero / Storico area
Alghero is a Sardinian city with a clear Catalonian influence. It underwent Spanish colonisation for a lengthy period of time which left its mark on the town’s architecture, traditions, its typical cuisine like the famous “aragosta alla catalana” (Catalonian-style Lobster) and above all on the local language, to such an extent that the people of Alghero have a strong sense of belonging to the culture of their motherland.
Alghero offers an enticing mix of two nations: delicious Catalan cuisine served in Italian piazzas, impressive monuments erected during Aragonese rule and Italian vineyards such as the prestigious Sella e Mosca (Loc. I Piani di Sotgiu, 079 997 700, www.sellaemosca.com), also a museum.
The historic centre is found within the old fortified village and tourism, together with craftwork, in particular the working of coral, is the main driving force of the little town’s economy. The town’s architecture, with so many Catalonian-style features, ensures that it is the perfect destination for the visitor who is interested in seeking a sense of refinement and detail in the buildings.
Underneath the spur of Capo Caccia there lies the Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune’s Cave). To reach it, take the footpath from the top down the panoramic ‘Escala del Cabirol’ (Goat’s Staircase) with its 656 steps. Alternatively, to visit Capo Caccia by boat, take a trip from Alghero (1 hour away) or, closer still, from Cala Dragunara. You disembark right at the cave mouth, located at the base of the soaring cliff of Capo Caccia, directly in front of the island of Foradada.
