The Sardinia region

History: Invaded by Catalan colonists in the 14th century, Alghero offers an enticing mix of two nations: delicious Catalan cuisine served in Italian piazzas, impressive monuments erected during Aragonese rule and Italian vineyards such as the prestigious Sella e Mosca (Loc. I Piani di Sotgiu), also a museum. The ruling families even gave Alghero the nickname Barcelonetta, 'Little Barcelona', and all the street signs are bilingual. One look at the medieval old town with its mighty stone wall and seven surrounding watchtowers, and you'll likely be keeping quiet about where you went on your holidays too.The beautiful beach is long and sandy, shaded by pine forests. There are plenty of festivals and events in Alghero, from traditional celebrations of saints such as San Francesco (4 Oct) and patron saint Michele (28-30 Sept) to the Sea Urchin Fair (end of Jan/beginning of Feb) and Alghero Summer Music (classical music concerts; Aug). Easter week is taken very seriously, with torchlight processions and other solemn religious rituals, and so is May's honouring of the Virgin of Valverde. To hammer home the welcome extended by the town to visitors, there's even a fair with the sole purpose of honouring its tourists with music, dance and food (Tourists' Fair, 3 Aug at Fertilia).

Alghero

From the property it takes only 15 minutes to get to the beaches and a few minutes to go walking along the old narrow streets of this fascinating walled town. The centre streets are full of shops with Sardinian specialities, souvenir and jewellery stores, where you can find the famous coral artistic creations.

The old town is the main shopping area for gifts and local produce. Via Carlo Alberto is best for gifts, while via Gilbert Ferret has elegant boutiques. An antiques, arts and crafts market is held in Piazza Civica on the last Saturday of the month. In high season (July and August), a late-night craft market lines the seafront (Lungomare Dante).
