The Sardinia region
The ties between Alghero and what is considered to be the mother-country, Barcelona, are very strong even today. The catalan language is still spoken and can be read on street names, heard in popular songs and used in religious ceremonies.Numerous archeological discoveries in the region testify the presence of man from the Neolithic Age (6000-5000 B.C.);the over one hundred "Nuraghi" found throughout the territory are proof of settlements from the Nuragic Age. Other Nuragic, Phoenician, Punic and Roman remains are located in the area.
The "Italian-Catalan town" or "Barceloneta of Sardinya" , according to some historians dates back to the year 1102 others believe it was founded in the second half of the XIII century by the Doria , a powerful family from Genoa.
The strategic position , the fortified ramparts and towers made the town a stronghold that was the ambition of the Catalans who conquered and repopulated the town. Alghero became an important regular trading port on the routes to Cagliari and Sicily.
The town is rich in art and history. In the Old town, inside the walled city ,you can visit the Cathedral ,The churches of San Francesco, Misericordia , and San Michele ,Patron Saint of Alghero. On The Bastioni or ramparts around the city overlooking the sea, you can visit the towers of Sulis, Sant Jaume and Porta Terra.
There are many beaches to choose from around Alghero, Lido, Le Bombarde, Lazzaretto,Pineta Mugoni, Porticciolo and Porto Ferro just to name some . You will notice the magnificent contrast between land and sea and the amazing emerald and turquoise clear waters around the region.
Under Capo Caccia, a limestone headland ranging from 170m at the cape to 300 m at P.Cristallo, you will find the Neptune cave. You can reach the grotto from Alghero harbour by boat or from the summit of Capo Caccia by a stairway of 656 steps called the Escala del Cabirol which was built in the year 1954 and descends the spectacular sheer cliff face to the entrance of the cave.
There are two important Nuragic sites near Alghero, you will find the Nuraghe di Palmavera on the road to Porto Conte and the Necropolis of Anghelu Ruiu on the Road to Porto Torres. Both sites date back to the nuragic and prenuragic eras and offer an interesting contrast to the magnificent beaches and coves around the region.
Tradition can be seen in the works of art that the Coral Jewellers design, the filigree handicrafts and in other local goods made from cork ,straw and ceramics. Traditional costumes are often worn for local festivities in most parts of the island.

"Perfect - was exactly what we wanted!"
My partner and I stayed in this apartment for only one week, but it certainly met all of our needs.
When arriving to Alghero we were greeted by Tanya, the owner's wife, who was highly accommodating and extremely helpful - giving us plenty of tips regarding the best beaches and restaurants!
Regarding location, it is located around the corner from a large supermarket (the apartment itself has plenty of crockery and cooking utensils), when walking towards the port there are lots of cafes, pizzerias, pharmacies and even a bakery. The walk itself to the port is short, but the apartment is still located far enough that it is very peaceful. Walking to the beach (Maria Pia) however is a bit further (roughly 30 mins) so was fine for us, but with children it would be a short cycle or drive. However the lido beach is even closer than that. There are also several bus stops nearby.
In terms of furnishing, the apartment has plenty of storage, well fitted bathroom and kitchen, as well as several balconies (perfect for summer evenings and hanging your washing). The apartment itself is also very cool despite the extreme heat we experienced during that week (35c)
I highly recommend this apartment!
