In August the poulation of the island swells to more than double when Italians from the mainland arrive for their summer holidays. They have kept Sardinia a well kept secret for years! Some of the most famous are that of Sa Sartiglia near Oristano at Carnival time (usually February) , S'Ardia horse race where riders are bare-backed and the Easter celebrations of Alghero. The Sardinia region
Sardinia isn't a mainstream Mediterranean destination but a sophisticated Italian island, west of mainland Italy and south of Corsica. With over 1000 miles of unspoilt coastline, it is renowned for beautiful beaches, clear azure blue sea and fascinating rock formations. Yet being the second largest island in the Mediterranean it has so much more to offer with an interesting history, for example, there are around 7,000 'Nuraghi', (mysterious stone dwellings dating back 3,500 years) throughout the island which serve as a permanent reminder of its prehistoric occupation, as well as numerous examples of Roman architecture as a catalogue of their dominance. It has a wild mountainous interior, vibrant towns with local traditions and colourful festivals throughout the year.
The cuisine offers a rich repertoire of dishes, heavily influenced by the country's various neighbours including Corsica and Italy, accompanied by impressive local wines. The mixing of game and farm produce (traditional with inland towns) and fish and seafood (famous in Alghero) result in a combination of flavours and appearance that is unique to Sardinia.
Near to Alghero is the lovely unspoilt Punta Giglio with marked walking and cycling trails and picnic benches which is a pleasure to visit all year round. A warm welcome awaits you in Sardinia where the people are warm and friendly.

"Well equipped central apartment"
Reasonably priced central apartment close to many restaurants and bars. Weather was still very warm in November and we had a really nice few days break. No need for a car as the apartment was easy to find on foot. The owner sent us clear directions to get to the apartment from the airport using the local bus - it only took a short time and was very straightforward. If you do hire a car, there is free public parking close by. Although the apartment is small, it was well equipped and could sleep 4 people comfortably. Highly recommended.
